One iron law of economics the libs can’t seem to get through their head is that if you subsidize something you will get more of it. We have already extended unemployment benefits for up to 99 weeks….which means we are subsidizing unemployment….which means we will get more unemployment if we continue to extend the benefits. I wonder how many of these 200,000 people might find a job once the government check is cut off?

This bill should have never had jobless benefits tied to the National Flood Program extension. Flood Program should stand on its own merits. We have so many idiotic Congressmen and Senators who tie several things together, stick some pork in there, don’t read it, don’t know how to fund it and then try to pass it. No wonder they have a 17% approval rating and most will also be on the unemployment lines after November. Enough is enough.

If any are over 50 years of age, they won’t get hired. A career coach had me trim 15 years of grueling hard earned experience off my resume to make me “more
attractive.” The employers want your year of birth or year of graduation then whammo, you will not hear a peep back from them. I just asked a big carrier why they need to know the year of my graduation. They replied, “Because most people show it on their resume and it’s required.” As soon as I told them the year of my graduation, they posted on my records, “Not hired.”

You obviously have a job and/or don’t know anyone who has been out of work for a long time in this economy. I know several people who have been out of work for more than a year. All of whom have been diligently searching for work. Of course, I also live in Michigan where we have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. You should not make general judgement of people who are out of work. Trust me, for most people, the unemployment check is not enough to even pay for the basic essentials so most people I know would rather be working.

Look here are the talking points.
Republicans want to destroy our lifestyle.
Republicans already are planning to take away our social security, medicare, medicaid, Amtrak, post office, free health care. Now these evil greedy souls want to deny us the right to continue unemployment so wewon’t have time to find that just right job that is our life long goal. Keep voting Democratic in 2010 and re-elect President Obama in 2012. Let’s not change trains now that were rolling down the track.

The funny thing is that I just read an article that said even with record unemployment companies are still poaching employees. The reason is because most people who are still working are the actual good workers who keep there skill sets up to date. Not to mention most people don’t even look that hard. I had to report to people I know who were vacationing since being layed off. Atleast the government got that right and took there benefits way.

i knew rosie would drop a line on this, but rosie, you have to admit, the democrats did not show up… and why do we need to tag this w/the flood insurance? train tracks, not going very well, because of the many ideas that we think has to be forced/mandated (i.e. healthcare)…

yes, we need to have a good program in place to get people back to work. those on welfare are taking advantage basically of free money… back in clinton’s days in office, we had a program that you could only have welfare for 2 yrs… you had to find a way to help yourself… problem we have is that many companies have problems in retaining good help or even keep help… some of them want the cheap help to save costs…but if truly you want to help the american people, is to get those jobs in america… as we see more and more jobs go overseas, we see less u.s. made products… gov’t needs to encourage jobs in america! we need to get our illegals out of the country, to allow folks back into jobs. our folks in unemployment need to take jobs they can to help resolve our economy and down the road, they can get good paying jobs for being a great worker… truly rosie, if your play is based on parties give up! because it’s on both hands for managing our gov’t and not just the PREZ, afterall, he’s not the only elected official, and besides the congress has to pass anything before it gets to the PREZ.

Very good point. Maybe this should be something that is addressed in High School, College and by Parents. Teach your kids to save money when they start working and also to find a good employer. Then if they are laid off at the age of 50, they’ll at least have money to fall back on. It appears this isn’t new that older people tend to not get the new tech/labor jobs. Hey, but good news, the Fed keeps raising the age for social security. I guess they know the economy much better than you do. They assume you can get a good paying job until you’re 70. Oh wait, that’s them and their CEO buddies. Oh well, they make up for it with unemployement benefits. Idiots!, them not you!!

You shouldn’t generalize and say people that are out of work for a year or more want to work and are looking for work. Like I stated yesterday I know people that are just the opposite. They talk the talk about wanting to work and how I must be happy that I have a job in this, oh so tough, economy. Then when I give them four, yes four leads and two very close reliable leads, they come up with excuses. Like, “Oh I’m sure a friend or family member will get the job with the City, or I bet there will be alot of people applying for it, or I have to go out of town to visit my GF, or I’m going to wait for a particular job.” Yes all true statements. I was also talking to my dental hygentist and she said she knows a guy that’s been out of work two years. He will not accept anything unless its management at a machine shop. I tell you what, if jobless benefits were cut like they should be after six months, these people would be working. Good news is like you stated though, the unemployement benefits don’t pay you as much as working. So my friend is considering bankruptcy now. I guess the governments false since of security is really paying off for the rest of us consumers. A domino affect!

Baxtor, you are probably correct. I suggested Anon not make generalizations, and yet I did it myself. The people I know that have been out of work are truly looking for jobs. One of them has applied for every job he can find, no matter what it is. He is even looking out of state which is not his first choice, obviously. He is of the over 50 set and the lesser jobs he applies for won’t hire him because he is “over qualified” and other jobs are going to mostly younger people. So I generalized based on experiences of people I know. I guess there really is a broad spectrum of scenarios.

There is too much abuse the way it is now.

I personally know of two people in MN that are collecting unemployment and do not want to work. One’s husband wanted her to stay home with kids and not work and she wanted to stay home and take online classes for a new career. So when she was laid off, just did that until her husband was laid off and then got a job right away.

The second is collecting unemployment and working as self employed on the side.

It is really frustrating to know some really need it but others really abuse it.

Yup. Buried deep in the bowels of the contentious, controversial issue of unemployment, is the National Flood Insurance Program. Nothing whatsoever to do with unemployment or COBRA. The NFIP is a CBO budget-neutral entity. It costs the government -0-, yet it’s authorization to operate expired on Mar. 30 and it somehow got stuck in HR 4851! What this means is anyone in the process of buying and closing on a home with lender-required flood insurance or anyone who’s insurance renewal date is now, can’t not purchase or renew their policy! The Louisiana Senator appealed to the Senate earlier today to pull the NFIP “line” out of the bill and put it to an immediate vote to get the agency back up and running again. The response he received was If you want the NFIP, you’ll have to vote “yes” to the whole bill. If you’re not ready to do that the answer to your proposal is -no-. An insurance program held hostage by an unemployment program. Sure, that makes sense…

I put my full trust in the president to know what is best for the country and to do those things to the best of his ability. Sadly, republicans are more interested in scoring political points and fearmongering. Typical Democrat grandstanding, pass a law which looks good for the news then bypass it at the first chance you get.

Yep Obama proud as are so many of the residents of the 57 states he said he was going to visit.

Policies that were to renew during their absence still are not being renewed.
We have areas in Texas where the flood maps were changed, of course that is true in the rest of the country. Mortgage companies have told their borrowers in those areas they need flood insurance. All those are on-hold.

I suggest you go ahead and have that flood policy issued, even though you don’t own the property yet. Sure you will lose a few days of premium but if you let them drag their feet for another two weeks you could end up at point A again. As it currently stands, the extension expires on 04-30-10 and you won’t be able to issue it then either.

    4. If you become too sick or too old to work, your benefits will continue for your permissible lifetime.

    5. Your approved spouse and approved children are guaranteed employment and all the same benefits as you.

    6. As an indentured servant, you’ll pay no income taxes, sales taxes, or property taxes, since you will have no need for money or property.

The practice of offering these employmee benefits was outlawed in 1866 by a Republican administration through the passage of the 13th Amendment. When we get this repealed, we can make you a member of the new union.

that’s kind of funny – since so many southern republican legislators are pro-confederacy (and thus pro-slavery)

And also seeing how much…umm… support the republican party has among african americans

Maybe if we cut agricultural support to foreign countries (required to keep our farm support system legal) and reduce the corporate tax breaks that have multiplied over the last 10 years and business subsidies, we would be able to help the hungry and homeless in America.

Since the attempt seems to be to put the U.S. on the same economic level as the third world, we can cut out all foreign aid and let them decide for us if we should pursue our current path.

so, what’s with the racit card her? Why do you think that a Southern Republican is pro-Confederacy and pro-slavery?? Our founding Fathers ALL owned slaves and a LOT of those Northern Yankee States had slaves as well. The War of Northern Aggression was not ENTIRELY all about slavery….so, get off the “oh, poor me…my gggggranddaddy was a slave….” – get a job, get off welfare and get back to work!

Read Willard’s post again. No unemployment, full medical care, no taxes at all for the worker, no house payments or rent, no changes in benefits at retirement. Everything the Obama bunch is asking for…..everything many thought they were getting.

What I learned in my history class (from a die hard liberal teacher no less) that the Civil War was about States’ rights, and that slavery was just the straw that broke the camel’s back. There were other points to it, like how much to charge for taxes on slaves as well. The Fed government wanted them to pay taxes on every slave, but the slave owners were saying that slaves are property, not people and shouldn’t be taxed as such, so they came up with a compromise of 2/3rds, for every 3 slaves you own, you have to pay taxes on 2 of them (at least that is what my history teacher taught us).

Agentman…that makes sense. The 2/3 makes sense, except remember it was not an income tax it would have to be an excise tax of some sort, perhaps on the purchase price.

Having seen some wills left by ancestors back in the mid-late 1700s, slaves were passed down when their owners died as they WERE treated as property, just as was the milk cow, goats, barns, acreage, etc. and were given freely to inheritants to include any of the slaves’ children that may come along. The Africans (and other islanders that were sold into slavery) were sold to the slave traders BY other Africans – captives from neighboring warring tribes and sold into slavery, transported to the States and sold to land owners and others that could afford to purchase them….and all in all, as once was told by Walter Williams (Economics Department at George Mason University) “African Americans are better off today BECAUSE of slavery. Had it NOT been for slavery, the AfricanAmerican would STILL be an African…being chased around by lions and warring neighboring tribes.”

I wish I could remember the ball players name right now. They did a TV special with him tracing his roots. He found them and showed the emotional trip he was on. He found the people there still sold their own kids when they found them too expensive to keep. The lifestyle is accepted and it is very hard to change customs.
It is interesting to note that attempts were made to enslave the American Indians. They could not, and this is apparently where the term “wild indian” started.

Rosie, people should take whatever job they can get. Is it a crime that businesses go under? It is not a crime but it is a shame and it is also a fact of life! I don’t want anything from our government. I was laid off from the construction industry in April 2009 and was able to secure a job in Feb. 2010 that pays less than my unemployment benifits just because I have pride and don’t want anything that I don’t truely need. Benjamin Frankilin said it best, “The Constitution guarantees us the right to PURSUE happiness but we have to FIND happiness ourselves”. So boo hoo for the people that take jobs that they normally wouldn’t take! They should be happy that they are working. With MILLIONS of people that think just like I do, we will get rid of these bleeding heart liberals in November and put this country back on the right track. It makes me sick to think of all the people who are collecting checks because they don’t want a job that is available and I have my taxes pay for these lazy, worthless eaters, but it doesn’t make me so sick that I will quit my job and become one of you. I will never be one of you!!!!!

BROVO!!! Bobby G. I admire you. I have interviewed people and offered jobs to people who will tell me they don’t want my offer, they are just interviewing because they have to in order to keep their unemployment coming in. They did not want to work. Why should they? I understand there are some that truly need the help, but come on people, be fair to each other!! Don’t be lazy…got to close as this just gets my grits up and I will say something I should not…

Hal, I have to disagree with you. The idea you mention takes away everything that America stands for. Not that it really matters anyway because before your twisted vision of a better tomorrow comes to fruition, they will have robots to do all of the menial labor that the citizens you project will be performing. What kind of life would that be anyway? No means of prosperity whatsoever, no money, so how can you achieve anything. Who will be the employers? If I had a choice in the matter where I would be on that totem pole, it would definately be as an employer and not an employee. How can you see a world where you cannot be laid off? It makes no sense. If you suck at your job, you are gone! No problem with that in my book.

The ones that get me are those that will work (for benefits) with the attitude of “only pay me this little amount of salary so you don’t screw up any of my welfare programs – AFDC, WIC, Medicaid, etc”….

My Employmeee Benefits thing is a way tongue in cheek criticism of the something for nothing crowd.
I wrote it in the early 80s when a big company near here was having a strike. The workers thought they really had issues.
In actuality the reason for the strike was to stop production long enough to sell down the product on hand. The union strike fund was fat, and using that was cheaper than a layoff.
The union’s payoff in the process was to get lots of credit for “winning” one for the workers.
It was all planned out from the start.

Wow you had me going there. I thought you were some twisted freak hellbent on extreme liberalism. I worked in the Electrical Union in Chigago for 18 years and boy have I seen a ton of brainwashed dolts in those years. The unions are coming to an end and rightfully so. They do nothing for the members anymore and they are in place strictly for muscle for the Electrical contractors who are big enough to be on the board at the union. Scabs on the job? Call the B.A. and he won’t even come to the jobsite so what is the point?

Well the unions do serve a purpose, but not the original purpose.
In a large company it is much easier to work with one representative than with all the employees separately.
And as a matter of fact, workers comp was pretty much won by Samuel Gompers in the U.S. and not a completely bad idea. Google him if you don’t know that history. Look up the Shirtwaist factory fire – it was the final event that got the wk comp law passed. Germany was – I think – the first country to do wk comp. Right out of the Karl Marx handbook. 1883.
Winterthur Swiss was one of the early ins companies writing comp.
Osha, unemployment ins are not bad ideas. They’ve just grown in some ways into monsters.
Here’s the link to the factory fire.
