the next thing you’ll want is to ban cyclists (not motorcycles) from the roadways. everyone needs to just respect whatever mode they are using, including good safety skills.

every prius, corolla, subaru outback and forester.

Next time you’re stuck in traffic behind some clueless halfwit doing 10mph under the speed limit in the passing lane, take note. I’m willing to bet that on at least 75% of instances, its some dolt in one of the aforementioned vehicles.

Seriously….keep an eye out and you’ll see what I mean. It never fails

And blue haired Florida residents as well as nonoagenarians who driver their 1972 Ford Fairmont in the far left lane.

Just because there are more of these donor-vehicles doesn’t mean it’s O.K. for them to travel with real vehicles. Roads were intended and designed for real vehicles. When you introduce these LSV’s, they lack the ability to accelerate up to the speed limit, and they offer little to no protection for even a minor collision with a real vehicle. I don’t agree that real vehicle drivers have to share the road with these LSV’s. They’re dangerous. If people want to use public roads, they should buy a car.

So they are less safe than a bicycle? Because last I checked bikes share the roads with regular cars too and that is okay. I’d rather be in a low speed vehicle than on a bike. Plus these vehicle are restricted to roads with top speeds of 35mph per this story. I don’t own one and I could care less if they are on the road. Drive safely.

In a collision between an LSV and an automobile, bet on the automobile. My concern is if you’re unlucky enough to be involved in an accident with one these things, the injuries to the idiots in them could be much more severe than if they were inside an automobile that offers some modicum of protection. They they’ll sue your _ss for big money for injuries that should never have occured.

Is there nothing that the Federal government wants to regulate and are there no people left who don’t want to control other people’s activity because it could “cost me money”. This is an individual, state, county or local matter. The common wisdom of people closest to this type of local community problem is the answer, not some lumbering Federal government eager to take on any responsibility once a few people petition it for a solution. Wake up America. Stop tying to control your neighbors by asking someone 1,000 miles away to tell them what you want them to do.

I think most people know that driving a LSV on any roadway is hazardous. Do we need a study to figure this out. How much did that cost and who paid? Here another safety concern of mine – drinking margaritas, shooting off fireworks while hanging out of a car sunroof driving down the highway. BTW I did that in highschool.

    To The Insurance Institute:
The problem with today’s LSV’s is the standard to which they comply. I believe that a LSV can be roadworthy with a some improvements. But first, your conclusions are very misleading. LSV’s are used mostly on short trips done at lower speeds. This is not wear most accidents occur. It is false to say they are unsafe because of how they are being used, they are much safer than other options. Not to mention, having everybody drive around in an armoured tank is not a solution to anything.
The issue we at EnVironmental Transportation Solutions has with the current standard is that it does not meet what the market really wants in a LSV. Today’s standard says nothing about the ability of the vehicle to stop, to turn and not roll over, or crash at limited speeds. Our product EcoVElectric was designed by talking with our customers, both in city fleets and in private use applications. THEY DON’T WANT GOLF CARTS OR GOLF CARTS ON STEROIDS BECAUSE THEY DON’T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THEM AT 25 MPH and they aren’t. Upgrade the standard, don’t through the baby out with the bathwater! We are ready to help do this!
