I agree that Transocean was wrong to try to limit its liability in the matter. Even if they are justified, this would do nothing but outrage the entire nation – bad business move in my opinion.
(I know a lot of left wingers would like to try to stick blame on the republicans for this (lack of regulation), but don’t forget, Salazar is a key player and had the ability to act before the spill)
What is there to defend? Your President has been on this since Day 1. First sent a bunch of lawyers, to put their boots on the throat of BP. That was very useful.
He goes to bed and wakes up thinking of nothing besides the spill.
Nothing, not even a brief Memorial Day Service honoring our fallen Soldiers stands in the way of him thinking about the spill.

About national security, marking 9/11 last year, the president said: “My greatest responsibility is the security of the American people. It’s the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning. It’s the last thing I think about when I go to sleep at night.”
The president used a similar line about protecting Americans multiple times last year.

Isn’t legal liability based on statutes…along with contracts and torts?

It is amazing that Obama comes away totally unscathed in this whole incident. Could you imagine this if this were President McCain or President Bush? We would never hear the end of this….

If you can follow the link, if not check out Time online. this is food for thought, as Mark Halperin points out, the same landscape was trod by Reagan, who to the consternation of the democrats, was quite popular, even if he was a repuglican (LOL!)

Back on topic, I think its pathetic how Transocean is trying to weasel out of their financial responsibility with regards to the spill.
It most certainly is the responsibility of the President to address what could be a significant ecological diasaster for every Gulf state. And, common sense tells you that the Commander in Chief should have established a working relationship with everyone involved in the problem solving. There will be plenty of tine for commissions panels and criminal probes……..that’s my point….this President knows nothing about working with private industry to solve any problem….but he sure can work with the labor unions that line his pockets. Obama has effectively cut himself off from what’s really going on in the way of progress because he comes out shaking his finger and suing and investigating.
And yes, I would much rather have George W. Bush overseeing this problem that Barack Hussein Obama of Chicago.
And, if BP goes legitimately out of business as a result of this accident, capitalism would have truly succeeded.

All that aside, the fact is that our revolutionary fathers, and the great progressive movements through out our history as a nation were all “liberal” as opposed to those who sought to maintain the status quo; Tories called them traitors to the crown; southeners called them “Negro-lovers”. Or they called them warmongers, when they favored staying out of those European wars. So some want things as they are, some want to stir things up. Too bad they don’t teach civics anymore; it would go a long way to making politics more palatable, so that everyone can have their “SAY” at leasts, if not their “WAY” and everyone gets behind a new president after he is elected because at that point, when he takes the oath, he is “OUR” president. You had your vote, you have to live with how it went. All I want is less diatribe, less vituperation and more respect for another’s opinion. I will respect yours, if only you would respect mine. the issue was settled at the ballot box. PERIOD.

If an Obama fan is comparing Reagan’s presidency to Obama’s, all I can say is he’s looking pretty defensive of his man, and time will tell whether Obama is out of touch with the citizens.
