This is prime example of the deterioration of values in America. I don’t much care what tropical island he was born in. “PROFESSIONAL” athletes should adhere to some standard of appearance. The league has no balls in terms of setting and enforcing standards. Hair should not be permitted to extend beyond the base of the neck. Shy should other athleted have to put up with nasty, oily braids on a football field or anywhere else? Polamalu looks ridiculous regardless of how well he plays. Give him a choice: make millions of dollars for playing a game or keep your ridiculous locks and flip burgers. Next to the likes of Payton Manning he looks like a fool.

If I were an opposing player, I would rip it by the roots as much as I could….

First of all, the NFL should have a ban on hair just like this yo yo hanging out of their helmet. Don’t give me that crap it is about his heritage…..

If I were an owner and I was paying his salary as an “employee” he would have a choice….if he wanted to play on my team….1) Cut the hair and represent the team or 2) See ya…..

Have to agree w/Bob and Andrea. A professional athlete should look and act like one. This clown’s hair almost covers the number on his jersey. He uses it as a gimmick to get publicity and shampoo endorsements. The league needs to assert itself and clamp down on these jerks. What are they going to do given the choice to clean-up or walk? They have no other skills and couldn’t possibly make the ridiculous amounts of money their paid.

While we’re on the subject, the jewelry should be banned as well. Necklaces and earrings have no place in sports or on the field. If you have talent, you don’t need gimmicks or other girly man distractions.

Jealous haters. IF you had the capacity to grow locks like this, make it to the “Pro Ball” of your profession, earn millions, you’d support him…as I do. All pro athletes are performers and the world is a stage…and not all the players are Anglo. Grow up. Lighten up. Enjoy the spectacle.

True, some people find all that hair unattractive. But, there is no rule against pulling a guy down by the hair as their is against face masking, horse collaring etc. So, he takes the risks. The guys in the NFL are a diverse lot. It’s part of what makes it interesting. He insures his hair as it makes him a lot of money. Given the typical one sided NFL contracts (greatly in favor of the owners) I don’t blame the guy on bit for cashing in. He backs it up with his play and he is not a moron like T.O., Ochocinco etc. Don’t judge the guy by how he wears his hair lest someone judge you by the kind of clothes you wear. Do you really want everyone looking like Payton Manning? Lighten up, friend.

So let me get this right Andrea, because Troy doesn’t wear his hair to your “standard of appearance” you are bitter? I can tell you discriminate against people that don’t look like you and you sound borderline racist based on the following comments — “with nasty, oily braids”, “keep your ridiculous locks and flip burgers”, “Next to the likes of Peyton Manning he looks like a fool”. Last time I checked, we live in the United States of America and people can CHOOSE to wear whatever hairstyle they like. Is it OK to you that Jared Allen wears a mullet that comes out of the back of his helmet? Or what about Robert Gallery that has long hair coming out of his helmet? You ma’am sound ridiculous and look like the fool.

I enjoy watching PROFESSIONALS PLAY A SPORT. If I want “spectacle” I’ll go to the circus where I can see the freaks. To most true sports fans, THE GAME is bigger than any one player and should be respected. None of the former football greats found the need to look like a clown. You don’t see jerkoffs like this on a pro golf tour do you? They wouldn’t tolerate it because it’s the last bastion of professionalism. Personally, I find these “ladies” repulsive and an embarassment to the sport. Palamolu should go back to Hawaii or wherever he came from an pick pineapples. He’d fit in there.

This is a safety issue, nothing more. It is dangerous for the same reason pulling on someones face mask is dangerous. I say let him have long hair all he wants… and let him insure it for all he wants. It wouldn’t be the first time Lloyds has been used to insure “crazy stuff” for publicity and it won’t be the last. But, if he is going to wear it long… it must be tucked up in his helmet for games.

All you folks with negative comments about what appearance a professional athlete should adhere to; here are a few suggestions –

    1. Buy your own NFL team
    2. Apply for Roger Goodell’s job
    3. Stop watching the sport

You sound really upset that these athletes make millions of dollars doing what they love to do. Don’t you wish it were you? What’s next, musicians have to conform to a certain standard of appearance? Wake up SNOBS, this is 2010 not 1964.

In the early football days, I guess not having teeth like Jack Lambert was real “professional”.

Well….Debbie “Do”, I am an avid sport fan and even a season ticket holder of a professional football team and I find this type of behavior as a way to garner attention…

The bottom line these football players are employees and until they own the team then the choice is simply cut their hair. If you were a male and walked into an insurance office with your hair looking like this wearing a suit….do you think you might be questioned by your boss and expected to change the hairstyle? You bet….however, they wouldn’t get past the first interview, so they need not worry about employment in my firm….

Well, Bob “BOO”…. Yea for you having season tickets, at least you should know how the game is played, and if you’ve been watching it any length of time you should also know that every player out there is there to garner attention while they are playing. But consider this: Apparently the owners nor the commissioner have a problem with this AND most importantly I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that I don’t think you will EVER have to worry about Mr. Polamalu walking into your little insurance company asking you for a job…And by the way if you are really the “boss” there then I feel sorry for your employees because they evidently are working for a superficial good ole boy. How sad for them.

If he has the ball (which is rare) he can be tackled by his hair and he knows it. It’s considered part of his uniform. Anyone that knows anything about Troy knows he’s a stand-up guy who’s never been anything but great for the game of football. And I can’t stand the Steelers FYI.

I’d love to see how long Alan would last against a “lady” like Polomanu. People, set aside your judgements. T.P.’s hair makes him a ton of chash (Head n’ Shoulders). The lack of guaranteed money is what leads to stuff like this. He is just being smart. The typical NFLer is not a recipient of million dollar contracts. Many just get paid per game unless they are well known. Even then, the money is rarely guaranteed. There is very little guaranteed money in the NFL like there is in MLB. It’s cliche by now but, a career can end on one play. They have to make the most of it. That’s the NFL. Deal with it or watch something else.

Have none of you ever heard the saying never judge a book by its cover? Troy is not only one of the best players in the NFL he also does a lot for the community. The Steelers went from winning the Super Bowl to not making the playoffs. The main reason why they didn’t make the playoffs was because Troy was hurt most of the year. In an era where you can’t turn on the TV without hearing about an athlete getting in trouble athletes like Troy should be looked up to not ridiculed because of the length of their hair.

Locks of Love is a great organization. At the same time I don’t see how you can blame Head and Shoulders and Troy for trying to make money. Troy’s hair is the most recognizable head of hair in pro sports. Of course it doesn’t hurt that he is one of the best players in the NFL and plays for the Steelers who have a national following. Before this ad campaign most people probably didn’t think to use Head and Shoulders unless they had dandruff. Troy has helped open their market to new users.

I think we all know the answer to that one but nobody will go there. It’s unecessary. If a certain group wants to draw attention to itself, let them wear nose rings so everyone can see them.

As for Polamolo, unless he’s got a bad case of dandruff, why is he using head & shoulders in the first place. And Lloyds insured his hair against exactly what? Getting cut? Falling out? Some people are ridiculous.

ok, let’s bring this back into perspective.

    1) it was head and shoulders who took the insurance out on his hair and not TP. afterall, it’s a great commercial when they try to discuss football, but in reality the folks really want to see how he takes care of his hair. wonder if there are any exclusions on this.

    2) now, what about those great singers who had long hair? crystal gayle had such long hair that went down to her ankles. we don’t make any comments that it should not have been so long? so why should it matter here for TP? afterall, i love long hair on a woman (and you don’t see much of that anymore).

    3) it’s football, the only thing that helps TP is that he plays defense. so if you really want a player to yank his hair, try to sneak a hair pull while your a reciever and the ref is not looking.

    4) funny how we comment on his hair, but that football player who lost is 50k diamond earing on the field during practice and then had his fellow teammates with hands and knees, rakes and other items looking for it but never found it.

    5) now, if i could grow long hair, not that i would, i might be jealous of how great it looks. but in my old age, i am lucky to keep what hair i have left. at least i can grow a great beard!

This is another in a long long long list of “LOOK AT MEEEEEEEEEE!” The reason listed is hilarious. At one time, samoans ate their vanquished opponents in tribal warfare. Does Troy sit down to a luau of broiled Bengal or Colt a la orange? Samoans also subsisted for centuries on roots, berries, and cocoanuts. I wonder if Troy abstains from all prepared meals. Finally, if Troy were so adherent to his heritage, wouldn’t he be living on the island of Samoa?
