Call me curmudgeonly if you like, but what is the point of offering a discount to married couples if you don’t have to be married to receive the discount?

Obvious disclaimer: personal opinion only, I don’t claim to speak for Esurance, etc… Lynda, I think this may be an insurance equivalent of “if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it’s a duck.” Just because the state or federal government says a couple isn’t “married” doesn’t mean they aren’t.

If anything I think this does a great job highlighting the REAL crux of the issue, which is “why is government in the marraige business?” Either you’re in a civil union or you aren’t. Marraige is a religious institution and should not be an institution of the state. If you want to protect the “sanctity” of marraige then do it on Sundays in Church. True Freedom means a government that doesn’t treat people differently based on their personal religious beliefs (or lack thereof).

Kudos to ESurance. Though likely partially motivated by PR I think it is commendable. Like JCPenny they may find themselves under attacks from groups like One Million Moms that think the force of law should require everyone to look and think like they do.

I don’t think that esurance is trying to be progressive so much as keeping up with their competition. In Washington, nearly all companies offer the married rate to civil unions and have since day one they started such a thing. Most companies writing insurance here don’t even care if you are officially or legally anything, they give the credits to any long term same sex couple. But I suppose it will make good press for esurance to “come out” with this ploy and call it a new.

Sorry ExciteBiker, however, the REAL crux of the issue is MONEY. Insurance Cos. are in business to make MONEY. They should be in business to make MONEY. When they make MONEY our rates go down. When they don’t make MONEY, our rates go up. Insurance Cos. have actuaries that pour over millions of statistics to see if giving a discount will make them MONEY. If it does, they give a discount. If it doesn’t they take it away. Has nothing to do with government, religion, True Freedom. It boils down to MONEY. Not Politics…………

Welcome to the real world Essurance. Now your less of a caveman but more like a slithering reptile & will soon be a dinosaur. One customer policy at a time we rewrite. So milk the Insurance journal commercial for what it is worth. Other offers discounts more quiety & feel good about it just the same.

Would having a roommate during my military service qualify me for a domestic partner discount? After all we shared the cooking and cleaning. The discount pie doesn’t get larger the pieces just get sliced smaller.
