The NCAA will spend more than $10 million to help fund additional in-home care for college athletes who have suffered catastrophic injuries on the playing field.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association’s governing body said it will cost an estimated $4 million to help improve the benefits for athletes who were injured before the current insurance coverage was available in 1992. It will cost an additional $6 million to cover inflationary increases on home health care for those injured after 1992.
The change allows these athletes to collect up to $100,000 annually toward in-home health care and could be used for personal hygiene, feeding and daily living activities.
NCAA President Mark Emmert said it’s the “right thing to do.” The additional coverage is still pending regulatory approval.
