If either side would be reasonable, a logical compromise would be to cut some on both sides instead of making a drastic cut on only one side. But who ever expects the government to do anything logical or reasonable…

Good news. The House voted down the Farm Bill. I guess all the wasteful amendments and special favors were too much to stomach. Another bill should be introduced to cut funding to the Agriculture Department since they lead many departments in wasteful, ignorant spending.

Cuts should be made to Food Stamps. I can’t tell you how many people I see in line at the grocery store who have their IPhones, expensive name brand clothing, purses, etc and are using Food Stamps to pay for their grocery. If you can afford to buy those items you can afford to buy your own groceries. Better manage your money and stop living off the government. The system is flawed and if better managed they could make necessary cuts to the programs without cutting from those that really need it.

Hmmm, Reagan’s welfare queen? I’ll see your subjective evidence and raise you mine. I have yet to see someone in the grocery line in front of me, using food stamps, with anyhing remotely close to name brand clothing and an iPhone. Besides, you do realize cell providers hand out iPhones with the purchase of a calling plan, right? Oh, and I just dropped off some “name brand clothing” as a donation to Goodwill. Just sayin’…

How about drug testing the “entitled” Bridgecard/Food Stamp people? Anyone with a job is subject to them at any time. I thought Food Stamps were “temporary” not a way of life…..kinda like unemployment. People won’t work because they have to give up the “free” money. There are people that need help and they aren’t getting help they need because of all the drainers. Did you know that Food Stamp/debit cards can be used in casino’s in Michigan too?! How a out college kids that are STILL getting Food Stamps thanks to Dept of Human Services. So much abuse & the administration just keeps spending millions of dollars on lush vacations on US!!! People need to start speaking up…….

Food Stamps? What Food Stamps? You mean Food Debit Cards, right? Wouldn’t want people to feel a little ashamed. Wouldn’t want them to feel compelled to WORK AGAIN and at least make an effort to provide for themselves. Biggest cut ever? – offset by the biggest growth in the program ever?….
Sorry, cut the program and cut the subsidies as well.
Plus, if you work you get the `CARD’.
If you don’t, you get the `STAMPS’.

Have any of you guys checked the unemployment numbers lately? People want to work and can’t find it. Or they’re working part-time but want to work full-time. No one is eating like a king on $1.50 a meal. Most people on SNAP are the working poor. For your sakes, I hope you never find out what that’s like.

Many working people receive food stamps. Many of them work much longer and harder hours than those of us in the insurance industry. Raise the Minimum Wage – that will help cut food stamp support.

You are very wrong SL. A raise in minimum wage will only force more layoffs by employers who are struggling as it is. When these people are let go, they will then apply for more food stamps, not less.

Yes and no. One project I was involved in studied the economic impact of a rise in minimum wage on the local economy. There is a point at which increasing the minimum wage will do practically nothing to the number of jobs available, however after that point it’s not worth it to keep as many people employed, and at that point layoffs will happen. It’s not an either/or however. Other than salaries, the employers have to take into account customer service, quality, overhead… Does it make more sense to have fewer, better employees work longer hours, get paid more and provide better customer service? Or should they just hire more part-time workers with more training, more overhead (uniforms, supplies, etc) at lower salaries? Both employers and government officials need to beware unintended consequences!

Unfortunately the bigger issue for many employers is not minimum wage, it’s healthcare cost. Not sure that I really want to open that can of worms here, though!

Before people complain too loudly about the stamps, try going for 1 week on $4.50 / day for food & drink. That includes your coffee, teas or other non-water drinks.

Now try to do that while still eating healthy foods…

The IRS: Did everyone at the IRS start their employment under the Obama administration? Are they all newbies? I seriously doubt it. Furthermore, Cincinnati (where this “scandal” stems from) is a conservative city, not liberal. These facts are among those that Issa was trying to hide. If someone wants to have an organization that is tax-exempt, they should be investigated. Many removed their applications, when faced with investigation. Gee, I wonder why. What were they hiding? Do you know what your President and administration is doing Libby? The wonderful IRS is taking a $70 Million bonus because their union contract demands it. They are under several investigations, some criminal and they think they deserve a bonus. Then, the President is off to Africa soon on his $100 Million African vacation while he imposes Sequestration on the country. Michelle has been staying in a $3,300 per night hotel in Ireland while Obama jets around Europe. I find it interesting that when he was a candidate, he spoke in front of 200,000 in Berlin. For today’s speech, there was 4,000. Hmm, I guess they couldn’t round up another 196,000 that wanted to hear him these days.

I have always respected the office, but I don’t respect this man who famously said – We live in the greatest country in the world. Join me as I seek to fundamentally change it. Look what he has changed it to. We now have deep divisions among the citizens, nothing is working for the people and we have a Big Brother government who thinks they have a mandate to do whatever they want. This is not America and it needs to change direction again for the better. When freedom is involved, the American People will not stand for that.

** Subsidy ** People are not expected to eat on $1.50 per meal. It’s supposed to contribute to the price of the meal the same way people were never meant to use social security as their main source of income during retirement. The program needs to be trimmed before it becomes another entitlement!…. Opps..Too late.

    Good news Bush lovers!!

For the first time since 2005, George W. Bush has a higher favorable rating than an unfavorable one, according to a poll.

Forty-nine percent of respondents viewed the president favorably, while 46 percent viewed him unfavorably. That’s up from 40 percent who viewed him favorably and 59 percent unfavorably when he left office in 2009.

    Will miracles never cease!

The Great Divider has fueled the partisanship by dividing the citizens by race, economic class and every other way possible. When a man says that we have to spread the wealth around, soak the rich for not paying more than their fair (70%), it is sure to bother people. It appeals to the entitlement crowd, but not so much on the working folks who are bearing the burden.

And the reason this country is divided is because a majority of the people are growing tired of the rich, white man controlling everything and taking all the wealth for themselves. They’re tired of the oppression, bigotry, elitist, bullshit they see all day every day from those in power. As evidenced, very clearly, by many of the posts on this blog. Your President pledged to support and uphold the Constitution when he was sworn in and then railed against it because of the limitations it imposed. Hard to pursue happiness when you are sick and in pain and can’t afford to see a doctor. That’s where it’s in the Constitution – as far as I am concerned. But I’m not an expert on Constitutional law. Good one Sarah. As with most of the programs established in recent years, Food Stamps is one of the most wasteful, unregulated that has been done. It is frought with abuse and it is all on our dime. As I have stated, there should be some tests to get them. 1. Take a drug test. 2. If they don’t have a job and don’t intend to work, make them do Community Service to earn the Food Stamps. We work everyday to provide for our families and put food on the table. Why do the freeloaders deserve our tax dollars?

      Agent & Sarah:

It seems that many food stamp recipients may not be able to work themselves off the program. Nearly half (47 percent) of recipients in FY 2010 were under the age of 18, and 8 percent were 60 or older, according to a September report from the USDA.

And a large number of food stamp recipients work. The USDA has touted that the primary form of income for SNAP recipients has “shifted from welfare to work” over the last 20 years. Nearly 30 percent of SNAP households had earnings in 2010, up from 19 percent in 1990. In addition, 41 percent of all participants in 2010 lived in a household with earnings.

Many jobs are simply so low-paying that workers need the assistance to feed themselves and their families, particularly during a prolonged economic downturn.

“The share of SNAP households with children that have earnings has basically stayed flat during the recession, which means the number of SNAP households with earnings has gone up dramatically,” says Dorothy Rosenbaum, senior policy analyst at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Libby, your hate rants are well known on this blog. You accuse Conservatives of wanting to poison the air, water, and starve the poor and underprivileged. We haven’t been saying that Food Stamps should be cut off, but cut the fraud and abuse out of the system and make sure the ones receiving them are not the deadbeats who are taking advantage. I don’t think that makes Sargeant or myself or Sarah or Dave bigoted. It is called being responsible. By the way, the air quality in this country is better than in 1993 and yet this administration is about to shut down the Coal Industry with their new regulations. I am sure WVagt is thrilled with that development.

My rants are not hateful. My rants are usually in response to some type of bigoted, hateful statement made by you or Sarge. If you both would set aside the animosity for a moment (impossible, I know) you would see we actually have common ground.

I am against government waste and welfare fraud. It should be addressed. But I don’t think that means there is no need for assistance programs all together, which it seems you do. Not everyone has the ability (mentally, financially, educationally) to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps.” A little compassion is all I ask.

The speaking in absolutes done by you and Sarge is what I disagree with. There is no All or None, You or Me, Them or Us, Right v Left. There are always gray areas.

The reason I do Youngin’ is simple. I, too, am against so-called “deadbeats” living off the system. My problem is when Agent and Sarge start lumping EVERYONE on assistance into the category of “deadbeat” (and several other very derogative terms.) THAT is my problem. Not that I don’t agree they exist, I just know there are honest, hard-working people on assistance as well. I don’t like blanket sterotypes and blanket bigotry. I can’t tolerate intolerance.

The reason I usually come down on Libby’s side is because the priorities of the right are usually as misguided as those of the left. Come on. SNAP is 2% of the federal budget and Defense is 20%. One program is used to feed the poor in this country and the other program is used to destroy and then rebuild countries on the other side of the world. The reasoning? People are poor in this country because they are lazy. People are poor in other countries because they are oppressed. For ye will have the poor with you always, and all that. Feeding them is not a “Progressive ideal”.

The reason why I come down against you and Libby is that you are for every mismanaged give a way program in existence Youngin. We Conservatives are for fiscal responsibility, a balanced budget, a strong national defense. We can’t keep running trillion dollar deficits each year and expect we will have a country left in a few years. We should be creating real jobs in this country instead of expanding the welfare state. This administration concentrates on everything but creating jobs and improving the economy. If the economy improves, there are less people dependent on Food Stamps and they are able to feed their family without government help. I know this is a difficult concept for you and Libby to accept, but it is what made the country the greatest the world has ever seen.

How about telling your President that Libby. He is poking his nose into Syria sending Al Quida arms to fight Assad and provoking Russia. He has already done it in Libya and how did that turn out? He is buying Russian helicopters to give to Afghanistan at the expense of the American helicopter industry. It sounds to me like your President is trying to police the world instead of helping create jobs. Instead of creating jobs, he is now proposing to shut the Coal Industry down. I am sure West Virginia and other coal states are real happy about that. I remember him saying that under his plan that electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. That is the end result. Don’t give me the BS about Global Warming/Pollution which is a hoax of the first magnitude. Our air quality is better now than 20 years ago.

Third, I don’t enough about the coal industry to comment on it. I do believe in global warming, but I know we have come up with clean ways to use coal. Again, I will defer comment on coal at this time.

The Dow is up to a record high, corporate profits are more than ever, housing market is rebounding, and jobs are being created in the private sector. What else do you want/need to prove it is improving?

And I must take you to task again on your comprehension skills. The poll Ron referred to said 23% of Americans think the economy is in good or excellent shape. Stats on how many think the economy is better or worse are 35% each.

Libby, the Tea Party was started as a protest against government taxation, spending. They have been consistently demonized by those on the left. Pelosi even said they were an astro turf movement. Then, we found out the IRS was targeting them and putting them through hell because they had a different opinion. I have worn out Congress.org to my representatives and Senators and yes, the President included. It falls on deaf ears or I get canned responses from minions from the staffs. I think that both food stamps as well as farm aid needs to be cut and cut severely. These programs tend to have little to no oversight over waste, fraud and abuse. We may not cut it all, but by cutting it by at least 25% or so and draining the swamp a bit, we might better be able to target where the remaining funds should be allocated and where thy don’t need to be touched
