Then she should have bought a car with a brake over-ride system if they wanted one. That’s like me saying my I’m suing over my TV as it doesn’t play 3D movies. Duh, buy a 3D TV if I want one. Buy a car that has the features you want. I’d give them a car ad and send them on their way. Case closed.

    I can’t believe the car didn’t have a mind-reading system installed!

It’s just like the Audi 5000 in the mid 80’s. Claims of unintended acceleration were picked up by the press who ran with it. 60 Minutes did a story on the Audi 5000 and even claimed that the actual car they used in the story overpowered the brakes and almost had an accident. The 60 Minutes folks later admitted that they had sabotaged the cruise control system to stick at full throttle and the brakes were partially disabled.

When the Toyota story broke I did a demo for several friends and co-workers to show what a crock unintended acceleration really is. I took them out on the freeway in my car which I ran up to 100MPH, kept the accelerator to the floor with my right foot and pressed the brake pedal with my left foot. Guess what. The car stopped and the only consequence was really stinky brakes. The supercharged engine in my car was no match for the brakes.

A modern car has brakes that can scrub off speed way faster than the engine can add speed. Toyotas are well built boring transporatation modules that have excellent braking systems.

A brake over-ride is a silly non-necessity. What’s needed is drivers who have common sense and a basic knowledge of how a motor vehicle works.

You know what’s even easier then hitting the brakes in an unintended acceleration? Putting the car in NEUTRAL….
