What happened to using the rear-view mirror? That already comes standard.

Hopefully the camera view will show people and things that are too small to be seen via the rear-view mirror, such as a young child, or the neighbor’s pet, or an abandoned bicycle. Checking the back of your car before backing is a reasonable and simple action to take, but accidents still happen.

Well, eyes & brains are standard equipment,. too. What’s your point?

Interesting on the cost to install. <$200. does that include the video screen in the dash as well? Gotta love that mark-up, eh?

The problem with the back up cameras are they only provide one view, right behind you. They do not show a bicycle, jogger, walker, child running from the side rear of your vehicle. By the time you see them, they will be under your vehicle. The camera forces you to look forward at the screen vs looking behind you. God gave us this great thing called peripheral vision so when you look behind you, your eyes will pick up somebody coming from the side. No more with the cameras. Unless they install three cameras, one by the license plate and one each by the corner of each taillight. Then I’d be okay with this. I also love the price the government says it will cost, $132-142. So that includes, wiring, camera, screen, controls, software, and installation, but yet our government can’t do anything for less than a million dollars. Hypocrites!

We bought a new car last year with a rear camera. I like it, but I forget it’s there. I still turn around to look and don’t notice the camera view until I’m ready to moved from reverse to drive. :)

It is a complement for your peripheral vision and your experience as a driver. Regarding cost, for sure is going to be more than what te government says, but there’s alot of stuff that are not useful in a car and can be substituted by this and will level the cost. It will help with safety issues.
