It’s not like they are losing money now, though, given the price of crude oil. Over the past 2 years they have reported a total of $30.5 billion in underlying replacement cost profits. They need to stop whining and let the region use the money as it needs to for the recovery. Theirs was the most vile of spills and, what’s more, it was preventable!!
BP has every right to seek restitution for monies that were paid with no direct ties to damage — remotely or otherwise — from the gulf spill. Just like Feinberg is creating for GM, this sense of entitlement and opportunity that is created by “opening the wallets” of companies is reckless and sets terrible precedence for those unscrupulous individuals who prey on these situations. Pay damages to those folks that were impacted and not lawyers and individuals who exploit loopholes for personal gain.
Sounds like BP is positioning itself for a defense later when they are taken to court by those claimants who had to go through the matching process and thus will receive much less as a result of policy 495. BOO HOO.
