Do they generally get cash value no matter what; so it behooves them to have a listing even if not planning on replacing everything?

I’ve never heard of an insurer providing a check list or other tool to a policy holder to help them construct an inventory list for their home. This ought to be really cheap to do, and according to the article, a value added service. Interesting that it isn’t happening…

Actually, the insurance industry does provide some inventory tools. See: https://www.knowyourstuff.org/iii/login.html Some individual companies also provide their own version. There are also many free apps available which allow you to take the inventory with your smart phone including pictures and info. Check out the Google Play store or ITunes for lots of options.

Even if you just use your video camera or phone to take a video inventory showing the items including serial/model numbers for all electronics and appliances as well as contents of closets, drawers, etc. you would be way ahead of the game in the case of a loss.

Farmers provides both inventory brochures and software for the insured to make an inventory. The more detail the better. Example: I had two insured’s get robbed within a week of each other and they got assigned to the same claims adjuster. The guy who had the inventory to provide the adjuster got paid within three days of providing the inventory – with today’s technology they could have paid him the next days online. The guy without the inventory was still dealing with the adjuster for more than a month after the first guy got paid. I asked the claims adjuster about it and was told that he has access to software that tells him the RCV of items (and where to buy it) and even provides the best match for the item if it has been discontinued by the manufacturer.
