This trend will surely reverse as the oil business slows down. It is a major reason for an increase in fatalities in our part of Texas.

Is it any wonder? Truck and Semis inthe fast lane. 65 mph speed limt gone -now 75+ and everyone is texting. The CHP has abrogated its responsibity to the public. Good new! Great for the funeral business. Happy Holidays. Mike

For a certainty, one of the main reasons for the increase in truck deaths is the result of the lack of lane discipline. The truckers ride in all three of four lanes, at speeds that differ from cars, and refuse to move over to the right as is the law in most states. We need state and local authorities to enforce the “keep right” and if that is accomplished, you’ll see many fewer accidents and deaths caused by truckers. Price of gas or oil has nothing whatever to do with this problem.

While ensuring truck drivers are rested is a significant need, that seems like more of a long-term solution.

“..and future rules that may require stronger underride guards on the backs of semi- trailer can help reverse the trend.”

This would help greatly and, from what I remember in another article on IJ, would be very cheap to implement. Why not move on this now?

Improving the underride guards would cause a decrease in vehicle deaths and major injuries when a car slides under the rear of a truck. Add in how relatively cheap this solution is, and I fail to understand why we don’t have stricter guidelines on underride guards already. There’s no need to wait until “the future” – whenever that may be – it should be done now if we’re seriously trying to improve safety.

Lot of rough comments about large trucks. Do you know that the accident rate for private passenger vehicles is four times higher than for large trucks. Did you know that in accidents between trucks and cars that more than 80% of the time the accident was caused by the fault of the private passenger vehicle. Did you know that for the 35 years from 1975 to 2009 the accident rates for trucks dropped almost every year. Since 2009 it has been o the rise and the reason is driver distraction in private passenger vehicles. Cell phones, GPS, dashboard displays, IPODs and more. Consider the reality and the cause when you complain about truckers on the road – and no, I am not a trucker.
