The biggest reason for the current trend in adult rider death and or accidents is that they are the worst law abiding citizens on the planet. They refuse to stop for anything, even an on coming car
they won’t stop for red lights or stop signs. When they are on the road they must obey the laws just like everyone else. Maybe then the will be safer on a bike. But I doubt it.
Yes, bikers think they own the road. Last week, I was following an adult biker and he was out in the middle lane doing about 20 in a 40 MPH zone. I had to honk at him to get him to move over and he wasn’t happy about it.
Perhaps the kids death reduction is due to them sitting on the couch and using their thumbs texting and playing on the internet with their cells instead of getting out and riding a bike.
True, there are plenty of irresponsible cyclists out there and, unfortunately, more every day. But there are also plenty of responsible cyclists who actually know the traffic laws in their state and abide by them… and more of them everyday as well. iamtraffic.org is a great resource for cyclists to learn to be safer riders within the law, and for motorists to gain an appreciation for the laws that pertain to both motorists and cyclists. As an example, a rider may be out in the middle of lane for good reason – like not wanting a motorist to try and “squeeze” him when there is little shoulder or dangerous debris to avoid… or may just be preparing to turn left (which he should signal). Key point – both parties should know the laws, abide the laws, and maybe show a little more patience. People may inconvenience each other – shouldn’t have to pay for that with their lives.
The issue I have is everybody wants to make special things like bike lanes etc, but those biker riders don’t obey the laws they never want to stop at a stop sign or a red light.
They don’t abide by the laws of the road. And everybody wants to make special things for the bike riders. I say when the start adhering to the street laws then maybe we can give them more consideration.
