IBM said today it has agreed to acquire The Weather Co.’s business-to-business mobile and cloud-based web properties, including WSI, weather.com, Weather Underground and The Weather Co. brand.

IBM will not acquire the TV segment – The Weather Channel –but the TV channel will license weather forecast data and analytics from IBM under a long-term contract, according to the announcement.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Armonk, New York-based IBM will acquire Atlanta-based The Weather Co.’s product and technology assets that include meteorological data science experts, forecasting capabilities and a high-volume cloud platform that analyzes and distributes large data sets in real time. The company sells data-driven products and services to the media, aviation, energy, insurance and government industries. Its models analyze data from three billion weather forecast reference points, more than 40 million smartphones and 50,000 airplane flights per day, the company said.

IBM said the combination of technology and expertise from the two companies will serve as the foundation for expanding the artificial intelligence unit, Watson Internet of Things (IoT) and the its cloud platform. The planned acquisition would bring together IBM’s cognitive and analytics platform and The Weather Co.’s cloud data platform, which the company says powers the fourth most-used mobile app daily in the U.S. and handles 26 billion inquiries to its cloud-based services each day.

The Weather Co.’s cloud-based data platform will allow IBM to collect an even larger variety and higher velocity of global data sets, store them, analyze them and in turn distribute them across the Watson platform.
