Insureon Turns to Silicon Valley Executive Somers to Head Retail Unit

Online small business insurance agency Insureon said it has added Silicon Valley veteran Jeff Somers as president and head of retail.

Somers was most recently chief product officer at Ticketmaster. Somers has also held leadership positions with eBay, Microsoft, Zillow and Amazon.

“The next phase of Insureon’s growth requires us to keep improving our best-in-class technology platform and customer experience,” said Ted Devine, Insureon’s CEO, in the announcement.

In July, Insureon announced it had secured $3 billion in capacity from Lloyd’s of London to form a new managing general agency (MGA).

“While insurance may not be the obvious choice, there is a tremendous opportunity to leverage technology to better meet the needs of small commercial clients,” said Somers.

Somers will be based in the San Francisco area and will open and lead Insureon’s west coast office in Silicon Valley.

Insureon serves retail clients directly and supports banks, brokerages and insurance companies in reaching small commercial business. It is placing more than $300 million in premium annually.

Before joining Insureon, Devine was president of Aon Risk Services and also served as CEO of Aon Re. Before his tenure with Aon, Devine spent 12 years as director of McKinsey & Co.
