Trump’s ‘2-for-1’ Deregulation Scheme Easier Said Than Done

The main barriers to regulation elimination are… regulations(!) that require paperwork, hearings, and permit long duration legal actions to block such regulatory streamlining.

That may sound like a satirical comedy. But, sadly, it is reality.

Thanks, lawyers and politicians! We citizens are paying the price for your past actions, over and over, day after day. But we will soon see an end to such foolish governance by selfish politicians and lawyers.

Sounds like a description of the most efficient form of government. That would be a dictatorship. Why fret with representative type governments when we can have what we now have?

Thank you, but we have had quite enough of a Progressive Socialist ruling by executive fiat. Time to do the right thing and that is exactly what Trump is doing. Checking off all the right boxes and keeping his election promises despite unparalleled opposition from the deposed party of sore losers.

Correct. Elections have consequences. Example: Gorsuch, and a Conservative SCOTUS majority for a decade or more.

SCOTUS will be sooooo very Conservative for decades, perhaps generations. The only uncertainty is whether it will be 5-4 or 6-3 or 7-2… somewhat irrelevant at this point.

Tell me more about how terrible regulations are, such as the vehicle safety regulations which give us a safe car instead of a dangerous one — a contrast made crystal clear by crashing a modern U.S. Nissan model into its Mexican equivalent.

Safety regulations are not terrible. Others that create unnecessary barriers to efficient production of goods and services aren’t. The ones targeted for elimination are not targeted randomly.

While I believe we can eliminate some outdated, duplicate or useless regulations, this is not the way to go about it. I prefer he give the heads of each agency direction to review and analyze each regulation under their watch and make a determination whether or not there is validity to each. The final determination should include input from industry, consumer protection groups, scientists, and career public servants.

This may take more time and work, but it would be a more thoughtful process. But, then again, we are talking about President Trump who is more concerned about his image and keeping all of his promises in the 1st 100 days than what is best for our country.

This is a stupid, childish policy by the Republicans. It does not care or address problems, it just seeks to reduce them. What even qualifies as a regulation? Stupid beyond belief, just like the conplaints about laws having to be under 100 pages that conservatives pushed for a while.

Your assumption is weak. Case in point the haphazard roll out of the travel ban. There was little or no White House consultation with immigration, customs and border security agencies on the immigration policy change, causing widespread confusion over how to implement Trump’s order. Ron,
By asking the various departments to IDENTIFY 2 regulations for elimination for every 1 they want to make a regulation, he is asking them to analyze existing regs.
IMO, the press and Clinton supporters (aka losers of the electoral election) are attacking every and any decision he tries to make, twisting words to make them look bad. For example, restricting access to the USA for people from 7 different countries that are known terrorists hotspots is NOT the same as banning Muslims. However, that is the way it is presented by the press and spread by sore losers. I don’t believe that the border agents will stop a Muslim from Canada from entering the USA. Further, both Obama and Carter did the same thing during their terms as President. No one was protesting then. You know why? Because Republicans have to go to work…

Trump did NOT do the same thing as Obama & Carter.

Obama’s Iraqi visa policy in 2011 did not ban Iraqis from entering the country. Obama’s immigration policy did not treat people with passports from the seven countries as unusually dangerous terrorism threats. Refugees continued to be admitted to the United States during that time, and there was not a single month in which no Iraqis arrived in the US.

Carter explicitly outlined the reasons behind the issuance of sanctions (including visa cancellation for Iranian nationals) and underscored his intent to apply pressure to Iran’s government release American hostages. Carter’s sanctions were applied to Iranian nationals as part of a clear objective to secure the release of the U.S. hostages.

        Jack,

What happens if a regulation is required by the FFA to avoid a new threat to safety? Do we wait until they identify and go through the potentially years long process to determine 2 regulations that are safe to eliminate?

IMO, President Trump brought that upon himself in how he rolled it out. No input from key players or due diligence into what could be the ramifications.

The differences between what President Obama did in 2011 are significant. First, it was a much narrower focus. Second, it was in response to an verifiable threat.

Like I said, President Trump’s actions show that he is far more interested in his image and catering to his supporters than being the president of all Americans. This is extremely dangerous, IMO.

Trump is pulling out of the Paris accord and we will be making our own policy from now on. Those Euro countries did not mention China or India at all and they pollute big time.

Although supportive of reducing needless and overbearing regulations, I see this mandate as kind of silly. Creating a new regulation but only if two old regulations are eliminated makes no sense. If we need a new regulation, go through the process and if it is determined it is needed and not overly costly or onerous, then do it. On the other end, if old regulations are bad, just get rid of them. Shouldn’t need a new on to get rid of two old ones. Just get rid of all the bad old ones and separate that from the issuing of new ones.

Dave, getting rid of the bad ones will require a lot of people to review them. The EPA by itself has issued thousands of them, almost all bad. No one is saying get rid of safety regulations if they make sense. Yes, they will all be reviewed and the bad ones dismissed.

I see it as temporary, until the unnecessary regs are deleted.

At some point, regs will be cleaned up to the point that this ruling will have to be ended. But the objective will be met; i.e. reduce compliance costs for regs that do nothing that is necessary.

Regs that remain will have passed the ‘necessary’ test.

Smart, but not completely well explained BY THE LIBITTERAL MEDIA.
