In a country that is based on individual liberty, individual freedom, and as importantly individual responsibility … shouldn’t the people who get addicted be a focus of lawsuits? Why does anyone think the pharma companies are our ‘nannies”, “hand-holders” or “mothers”?

Well there has to be a pocket to get into it is the American way in today’s world. Although I fully agree with you Barry that the individual is responsible for their own care unfortunately we live in a medical world where doctors have to see way to many patients per day in order to make a living and the patients want a magic bullet to make the pain go away. For the vast majority of patients a short term dose of an opioid helps get them past the issue but for others the root cause is far more severe and long term treatment with the risk of addiction is the result.

I wish personal responsibility was the easy answer to the problem but there are far to many factors present to have that be the case.

Do I feel that big pharma is the bad guys in all of this no shot but they do profit from the sale and apparently from the cases cited are culpable as well.

In a perfect world all of the players in this would get together and develop a solution but since we live in a flawed world as we do the less than perfect solution is to make the plaintiff bar even more wealthy. Really sucks.

I think we can agree that this is a whole new field of lawsuits and the attorney’s just love it.

mrbob, you are onto something here. The doctors are seeing many more patients and since most have insurance, they have a contract with the doctor to pay anywhere from $65-$125. The doctor of course has their overhead, including employees, insurance, equipment, etc… Doctors should make more than $100K a year for all their studies, but the problem is it’s hard with all the expenses. So instead they get a legal, which in every other industry is illegal, a kick-back from the drug companies. I don’t know the amount, but if they get $100 a month per patient for oxy and $50 per patient for Percocet, they’re going to write out as many as they can. Plus these patients then end up being monthly visits because they have to come in every month to get their refill. Why do you think they have “pain management clinics?” They are legalized drug dealers. So I can see why they are going after big pharma. They have intensified this problem with the kick-backs. In turn it has really hit the insurance companies hard as well. By cleaning house, not only will it save lives, help Americans, but cut costs in end.

Doctors are seeing more patients because so many have retired early or closed their practices due to Oblamacare. We have a severe doctor shortage which will only get worse as long as this dastardly law is still in place. Large practices run people through like cattle and doctor/patient time is kept at a minimum.
