Any revision of an Obama Administration rule, regulation or policy is a good thing.

I’m not sure, the specific one that was brought up in the article (on approving or rejecting self driving vehicle systems before they can be sold) seems reasonable. It’s still early days for this technology and if we are going to put thousands of pounds of force behind a computer we would want to see a few years of error-free consumer use before we start deregulating.

With any new technology, developers and regulators need to build a common vocabulary and understanding of the issues. Self driving cars not only need to find their way , they need to make decisions. The industry is very far from knowing how to embed “ethics” in the machine. Does the car always protect the driver? Does the car always avoid the obstacle? Does the car know if the obstacle is alive or inanimate? Can the car computer be hacked? If you don’t have regulators, who knows what developers would push out to consumers in this new race to be first. But, regulators need to know what they are talking about before they make guidelines. Work together!
