    It is entirely reasonable for drivers to expect that an autonomous vehicle can drive itself with absolutely no input from the driver. When I hear about autonomous vehicles, I expect to be able to sleep or do anything else while the car gets me safely to my destination. If they can’t do that, what’s the point?

      I have no desire to trust my life and family to sensors that could fail. Besides, I enjoy driving.

      There is no such thing as a functioning autonomous vehicle. Most of the companies are even saying what people think this means is at least 25 years away. So we have vehicles that kind of do it, under perfect conditions but you have to be ready to take the wheel at a second’s notice. To use these properly you have to be paying attention the same as if you were driving, which is unlikely if it’s been going solo for 5+ minutes.

        Hard to blame the car when there are all sorts of warnings that require people to not take their eyes off the road, not be distracted, etc.

        These aren’t perfect devices and until that moment exists, it would be absolutely foolhardy to trust a machine in a literal life or death scenario. I am firmly in the “user error” camp on this one.
