Blakey Named President, CEO of Starr Insurance Holdings as Dangelo Retires

Starr Companies announced the appointment of Steve Blakey as president and chief executive officer of Starr Insurance Holdings.

Blakey replaces Chuck Dangelo, who has announced his retirement. Dangelo has been with Starr since 2009, when he left American International Group (AIG) to join Maurice R. Greenberg after he left AIG as CEO in 2005.

Blakey has 35 years of experience in the commercial insurance industry. He most recently was vice chairman for Starr Managing Agents Limited and Starr International (Europe) Limited, leading Starr’s operations throughout Europe and Latin America. He also serves on several boards for Starr’s various insurance entities.

He was responsible for establishing Starr’s London operation in 2006, expanding the company’s capacity through its CVS 1919 Syndicate, Lloyds Managing Agency and newly-established company subsidiary.

Prior to his current role, Blakey held positions with Starr Aviation including chief financial officer and chief operating officer before becoming president. Under his leadership, Starr’s Aviation division expanded throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, and Latin America and became a leading global underwriter of aviation insurance.

As president and CEO of Starr Insurance Holdings, Blakey will lead Starr’s insurance companies and subsidiaries that include Starr Indemnity & Liability Insurance Co., Starr Surplus Lines Insurance Co. and Bermuda-based Starr Insurance and Reinsurance Limited.

“We are pleased to introduce Steve as our new company president. With over 35 years of experience, including establishing Starr’s presence in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe as well as making Starr one of the leading providers of aviation and aerospace insurance in the world, Steve is uniquely qualified to lead the company going forward,” said Greenberg, chairman, Starr Companies.

Greenberg said the retiring Dangelo “has been instrumental in leading Starr’s growth.”

Prior to joining Starr, Dangelo served as vice president and chief reinsurance officer for AIG. There, he was responsible for the management of ceded and assumed reinsurance divisions. He also served as president of AIG Global Risk Management. He also spent 24 years at CNA insurance in various management roles.

In 2009, he joined Starr as chief executive for Starr Indemnity & Liability Co., chief executive of Starr Excess Lines Insurance and director and chairman of Starr Insurance and Reinsurance.
