I am “pro” driverless cars but also think manufacturers need to be consistent in what they consider a “disengagement” activity so we can properly analyze the data.

All it takes is one sensor failure and you are pushing up daisies.

Although you’re clearly exaggerating, I am aware of the dangers of autonomous vehicles

Tesla couldn’t even recognize an 18 wheeler on auto pilot. Sensor failure.

I’m actually listening to Tesla right now, Agent…What album is “Sensor Failure” on? I’ll check it out.

Alex – I think it’s on the Five Man Acoustical Jam album. It was definitely a song they played live but didn’t put on any studio album (clearly I enjoyed your funny comment – thanks for the laugh :)

Haha, Agent, jokes on YOU. I checked and Tesla NEVER covered “Hit the Road, Jack.”

do try to have a nice day.

Are you implying NO ONE has died in a driver-less auto?

A ‘disengagement’ report points to dangers of driver-less cars, but also points to concealment of such by some nefarious car manufacturers. So, we can’t trust ANY of the reports under the current reporting requirements. Volkswagen should be one of the first car manufacturers to be scrutinized due to their poor record in regard to reporting faulty Takata airbags, 1960’s Beetle problems, etc.

TC4PRB: Are you implying NO ONE has died in a driver-less auto?”
No. I’m not implying that! Come on. In my second comment said “I am aware of the dangers of autonomous vehicles.”

TC4PRB: So, we can’t trust ANY of the reports under the current reporting requirements.
Yeah buddy, I know. My first post said “manufacturers need to be consistent in what they consider a “disengagement” activity so we can properly analyze the data.”

I feel like you’re just trying to argue for the sake of arguing, and you didn’t actually read (or comprehend) any of what I wrote before you chimed in.

Polar, VW also got caught lying about their emissions tests and we all know where that led.

PS; ‘died’ is not the same as ‘dangers’. I used ‘died’ by choice, for emphasis of GREAT dangers.

Working in downtown Scottsdale, I see these “driverless” vehicles every day. Either the computers are not driving them very often or they are horrible drivers. The run the red light at Buckboard and Indian School every day. They stop fully in the middle of the crosswalk. Suddenly swerve from the right lane to the left turn lane (without signals).
So, if the human is at the wheel each of the 10-15 times I see these every day…how can they obtain any reliable data on the computers?

If you’ve ever driven in South Florida, with the elderly behind the wheel of so many cars, you’d see many stranger and more dangerous incidents. I guess we just have to trust that engineers will master all the on road variables, including weather conditions.

You present an option, but we aren’t bound to your ‘or’ question / option. NEITHER are safe. So, I prefer NEITHER option.

Autonomous cars may be safe some day, but not without much more improvement and off-road testing.

I was in Pittsburgh fall 2017 and we called an uber. My app told me a driverless uber was coming to get us which had us more than curious. Sure enough this weird SUV with stuff all on top of it pulled up. It had a “driver” in the seat and a passenger taking notes on a cpu. The driver had to take over two times on a 15 minute drive. Once to go around a car that had stopped and wasn’t moving in the middle of the road and once to go around what appeared to be last minute construction that wasn’t marked in the system. Cool experience though, but we would have gotten nowhere without the driver taking over.

when the IJ starts requiring ID verification in order to post a comment and bans all personal attacks, what will you do all day? I doubt your customers would like to read some of the stuff you post.

my mistake, that wasn’t meant as a reply to your post. You’ve been quite civil lately, even going as far as calling for unity and an end to all the BS. It was more meant for others. My guess is there will be a few less posters around here.

Okey dokey! BTW; I agree that Alex Jones is kooky. I’ve never listened to more than about 60 seconds of his vids or rants. Also, it’s never a good thing to try to associate conservatives with the most extreme ‘conservative’ people; e.g. AJ. Finally, you’ll note that most people, left or right are civil as long as discussions/ debates are moderated by web managers or by self control of those debating. One person here, who shall not be named, is often throwing around attacks and insults. Let’s agree to step back from those escalations of type and turn back to the topic…

I agree self-driving vehicles WILL EVENTUALLY BE a good thing. But more testing, off-road, is needed before we commit to using them almost exclusively.

unbelievably well put, TC. THAT is the way to comment. If more people follow that example, there’s hope for this comment board yet.

do take care and have a great day. I truly mean that.
