Millennials are already in insurance. They are born between 1981 and 1996. They have experience already and are better adapting in this changing world. Do not insult a whole generation due to your difference in opinions. I know a millennial that is the best personal insurance salesman I have met.

What was the percentage of Gen-X’ers and Baby Boomers who, when they were renting, did not have renters insurance? And don’t give me a number that can’t be verified or your gut opinion on what the rate was, as that’s not helpful at all.

We need to know what other generations did who were in the same positions as Millennials – only then we can then infer something relevant from your statistic.

I also looked it up and do you have anything besides a survey to verify you numbers? I do not believe you do, surveys are not statically significant because of the way they are conducted (it lacks the random aspect and also misses out on groups of people). I will agree that I believe it is common for a majority of people who rent (millennials and other generations) to not buy renters insurance because they do not need it, but I at least of the decency to say that is my opinion from my experience as a millennial broker who works with people in all 50 states.

            Agent,
You argue against people needing health insurance. You’d rather have renters be required to have renter’s insurance than anyone living required to have health insurance. What does that tell us about your common sense? Oh and, hypocrisy much?

Thank you for making what I believed to be an obvious point. It would be unwise to not argue a renter needs insurance, that is just not true. Even if people do not care about their stuff, my biggest issue with not having renters is the personal liability they are not carrying on themselves.

This Millennial (really, just call us “adults under 40” now) has no problem selling insurance to my generational cohort. Just gotta go at the client’s/prospect’s pace (e.g. if they want a consultative relationship, word; if they wanna pay everything online themselves and never talk to me unless they have a questions, even better.), and identify needs that they may not quite realize (i.e. Life Insurance, DI, etc.)
I will say that we have little to no brand loyalty however, and insurance advertising doesn’t help.

Hey Helping, Personal Liability claims are almost non-existent with Renters customers. The vast majority of claims are property claims. If 70% of Millenials choose not to have coverage, they do so at their own risk and they are stupid not to carry coverage since it is inexpensive.

            Agent,
I do not know what you are attempting to discredit me on. While yes of course most claims are property claims on renters insurance (is that not obvious), but personal liability if anything were to happen and you were to be sued is a big thing for me since I have witnessed this two times for renters. Also my only point I did not agree with you with Agent is that I believe you are inflating your numbers, but in general I agree that most millennials (and all those who rent) do not carry renters insurance. Please stop attempting to discredit me where we are agreeing for the most part even though I am a millennial agent, we are actually agreeing on the subject because as an agent renters insurance should be a requirement for all those who rent.

So now I am inflating my numbers according to you. I don’t inflate my numbers. Property Casualty 360 does not inflate their numbers based on their research. Why is it so hard for you to believe that 70% of Millennials don’t buy Renters Insurance? By the way, I have been at this business over 30 years and have yet to see a Liability claim paid on a Renters policy. I only remember one Medical Payments claim on a slip and fall in an apartment. Luckily, the insured had bought a Renters policy, so that claim was paid.

      Helping out helpingout….

Agent – I googled “Property Casualty 360 AND renters insurance” and found only one study that specifically mentioned millennials.

That study found “56% of millennials do not have renters’ insurance.”

So we’ve got three options here:

      (1) You are referencing a different study than what I found. Totally plausible. If this is true, please provide a link to the study you’re citing. If not,

      (2) You intentionally inflated your numbers. If not,

      (3) You mis-remembered what you read.

There is no fourth option. Which one did you do?

Rosenblatt, your Googling skills are called into question if you only found one story on this. I found 4 and one even led to the IJ article on this same subject. They all reached the same conclusion that up to 70% of Millennials who rent do not buy Renters Insurance. Now, you and your buddies disputing this can down vote me all you want. I couldn’t care less.

Long time lurker, this might be my second post. Lots of interesting debate on this site.

Not sure why it was so hard for Agent to just copy and paste a link. Here’s what I found, Rosenblatt. It may or may not be what Agent is referring to. We may never know.

“Here’s a paradox: Millennials are most likely to rent their homes, but are least likely to purchase renters insurance coverage.

According to a new survey from Princeton Survey Research Associates International for InsuranceQuotes.com, 66% of 18- to 29-year-olds rent their homes, compared to 37% of consumers overall. However, nearly 70% of those millennials don’t have Renters’ insurance.”
