How to Deliver Restaurants from Risks of Take-Out Boom

    I find it laughable that one would suggest a “fleet safety program” for food delivery. There is rarely a fleet. It is almost entirely a non-owned auto exposure which has become increasingly complex with the growth of third party services like GrubHub and UberEats which may deliver food for multiple restaurants. While both the third-party courier and the restaurant will screen MVRs and require evidence of personal auto insurance, fact is there is a tremendous amount of turnover, and the driver’s personal auto policy will usually decline for business use. Let’s add to that the fact that meals are usually delivered during the dinner hour which is the most congested traffic of the day. It’s becoming an almost uninsurable exposure due to the lack of real control over the driver – often not an employee, not in a company vehicle (negating use of telematics), and often not even driving their own vehicle (mom’s, dad’s, girlfriend’s car, etc). Speaking as someone who has 15+ yrs experience insuring this class, loss experience is directly correlated to the amount of control the restaurant has over the vehicle in which food is being delivered.

      All of the comments are spot on. But the real danger to the restaurant is the creation of an employee/employer relationship. By exercising the degree of control/management over the delivery person recommended, you have created a borrowed servant. It sounds contradictory, but the restaurant should exercise as little oversight as possible. Or even better, if the restaurant is so dependent on deliveries to make a profit, there is something wrong with their business model. Just don’t deliver. Put quality food in front of the patron, with friendly service, at a fair price.

    From what I have observed, even if Millennials go out to eat, they sit there with a cell in their hand and husband/wife say nothing to each other.

      Agree. I wonder why Mr. Bleser didn’t mention that in his presentation at the conference? Certainly that would have been helpful for the attendees to know.

      Agent hates millennials, even the few that he raised himself. Yet, he never praises them for not voting so he and his ilk can continue to sink this country. What a conundrum Agent must find himself in.
