Another recre-pot article by Insurance Journal that will attract the usual stoning advocates…!
The difference in job loss probabilities at different job grades is not completely unexpected; i.e. mid/ senior managers are doing the hiring and firing, and can avoid being fired as long as they get their staff to deliver what upper management needs.
The reduced job effectiveness of stoners is a SECONDARY reason for termination. Of course, the primary reason is that stoning is FEDERALLY illegal. Any action by a stoned employee that adversely affects the public, or the reputation of the company, ultimately legally becomes the responsibility of top management or the company.
I recently attended a conference in Michigan, a state which voted to make MJ recreational use legal. It was evident most employers will be watching performance more closely as well as behavior once the employee returns from lunch. No one should be going to work impaired, but unfortunately, there are those who do. Functioning alcoholics, those who are addicted to opioids, MJ users, the cocaine addicts on Wall Street, Adderall users, the list goes on. It’s only right for any employer to fire someone who is having performance issues, no matter what the cause, substance abuse or not. Be warned MJ users who reside in states where it is legal, those you report to are keeping a watchful eye. You are far better off waiting until you punch the clock at the end of the day before you partake, should that be your initiative.
Penalty flag for weak attempt at strawman use. Cap’n wrote “No one should be going to work impaired…” and “It’s only right for any employer to fire someone who is having performance issues, no matter what the cause…”
Good Show Captain Planet,
I agree with your statment “No one should be going to work impaired, but unfortunately, there are those who do” I do not have a problem with whatever you do when you are at home and on your own time, I believe it is up to the individual on how they relieve there stress from the day-to-day grind.
Now speaking for myself and only myself, I prefer to use my work week to challege myself so that I can be more productive on my job, and keep to in my mind to “Do better today, then yesterday and better tomorrow, then I did today”, with that being said, I will have a joint and beer on the weekend, plays some cards, chill out a little, just to let go of the day-to-day grind of work, but when work starts, indulgence stops, work week or weekend.
So happens, I was an accident, because a forklift driver was inpaired at work, and tested positive for the alcohol, I was found not at fault but since I was the victim it was Goverment Policy for me to still take a drug test, and if found to have THC in my system I would be Fired and could never work for a goverment agency again, verse the person who was intoxicated on the job, was allowed to continue with his service after some counseling, I chosed to resign my position and rather then be terminated so that I could come back another day,
Did I find this to be unfair?..of course, but hey what can we do about it?..nothing, but accept it. Use MJ at anytime within 60 day could cost you your job, use alochol anytime within 24 hours will get you some counseling. Do I feel this policy needs to be changed? Yes.
But will it? who knows?

Alcohol & pain med addictions don’t support pot use via an ‘if that, why not this’ argument.

Reading comprehension Yogi – for the love of Strunk and White! You completely missed what I said. Once again, thank you for trying out.
Polar, if I ever had an employee who was a stoner, he or she would be out the door in a heart beat.
Funny thing is, you probably do and don’t even know it.
