Bah definitely deserves compensation from Apple, but a billion dollars might be just a bit too much. Facial recognition seems to be one more technology that is not yet ready for prime time. I have no intention of switching to it from my current fingerprint access on my iPhone. Until, of course, Apple forces me to switch.
Boy did this attorney land the golden goose… Apple are completely and utterly screwed on this one… This is absolutely terrifying. It also resonates on a cultural level because it seems to touch on just about every privacy concern big tech is facing now… Mishandling of privacy data, linking false data to the wrong person, etc. Apple royally screwed up on this. I hope they get slapped with mountains of punitive damages.
For the record, I have always thought that the facial recognition features were Orwellian… This is why I have a Samsung with a number pin… IJ actually posted an article on this particular subject a few months ago. It is one thing to have your password stolen–which can be changed–but what if someone steals your face or your fingerprint data? Also, existing technology makes it very easy to gather someone’s finger print or facial data… This is reminds me of a private version of China’s Social Credit System (we can thank big tech for assisting them with that too).
Misleading story. Facial recognition software has nothing to do with it. The error was the name on the fake ID asserted with the face. The police arriving with a picture that didn’t match should never have arrested.
well, that’s one way to pay off your student debt…
There was a screw-up. But a One Billion dollars screw-up it is not. And not entirely Apple’s gaff.

Like I told you,
What I said,
Steal your face right off your head.
And so it was foretold by the prophet so many years ago.
Big Tech, aren’t they wonderful? NOT!
“He’s gone…”
they need to perfect the retinal scan technology, like they use in the movie “Minority Report.” It’s pretty hard to fake a retina.

Agree, Hiram. No PD will have the wealth that Apple does though. .
No, Apple blindly trusting their facial recognition software seems to have plenty to do with it.
Photo shop anyone?
This appears to be egg on Apple’s face, among others.
Rotten Apple sued by not rotten apple for falsely accusing him of being rotten.
