I am not going to play the “NO YOU ARE WRONG” game. Maybe there is some truth to the impact of ethics training on good behavior. But count me in the skeptics camp; I just think it is hard to prove one way or another.

Take this line in the article:

“Those passing the exam without prior misconduct appear to respond most to the amount of rules and ethics material covered on their exam. Those already engaging in misconduct, or having spent several years working in the securities industry, respond least or not at all.”

Logic says that if people who have previously exhibited good behavior continue to do the same in the future after taking the exam, and vice versa, it may be the caliber of the people involved and not the ethics training that determines the behavior.

I have a strong, nearly unshakable belief that honesty in society – and insurance – is not as common as it was 30 years ago. (As an example, look at how low trust in news reporters has fallen with all demographics in the past 30 years. Once an institution greatly trusted by Americans, most polls show trust in media falling below trust in Congress.)

Craig, If ethics training really worked, we wouldn’t have so many ripping off people for their money. See it constantly on this forum. Pretty sure most of them took ethics training to get licensed. Did no good because they are basically crooks.

I do think ethics and morals can be taught – I learned that from Chidi Anagonye, a Professor of Ethics and Moral Philosophy at St John’s University. He certainly seems to know what he’s talking about!

Personality and morals are learned at a very early age. If parents haven’t taught their kids right from wrong early on, they will not suddenly learn it as adults.

I take it from your response that you are not familiar with the teachings of Chidi Anagonye? I have less than 20 hours of his work that I’m familiar with, but I think everyone should know who he is and what he’s been trying to do for the human race.

I can learn “ethics and morals” from the greatest teacher and I don’t have to pay money for it. It’s called the Bible.

            HAHAHAHAHAHA

If you look to the bible for morals and ethics, we know all that we need to know. I bet you think the president is the chosen one too.

Surely you aren’t referring to the television character on The Good Place, an NBC sitcom. Chidi Anagonye is a fictional character.

I certainly am. While a fictional character in a fictional TV show, I think more people should watch it/him and think about the moral/ethical discussions the program raises.

Also, don’t call me Shirley (yes, I’m bringing up a fictional movie now :)

I stand by my comment. It’s a great show and his character’s teachings are 100% on-topic for this article.

That is such a great show. I am really going to miss it. Ethics and morals are not as simple as they sound.

Thank you for understanding the comment and, even though I brought up a fictional character, seeing how it relates to the topic at hand.

If they can be taught, every elected official needs to learn them. Sportsmanship too. Too many sore losers that dont like their participation trophy.
