How Shaming Works to Improve Workplace Safety: Viewpoint

    So, a Bloomberg staff writer thinks ‘shaming’ is an effective safety control tool in regard to workplace injuries?

    The stats thrown out on the loss reductions seem impressive, but do not state the raw numbers. I await some comments by our resident troll about how I should search for them online. To that I preemptively remark; it would make sense for the AUTHOR to have searched for them and posted them in the article.

    Not surprisingly, the author, employed by BLOOMBERG, a Democrat rival of Trump until a week ago, attacks and blames the Trump Administration’s de-regulation of industries for a rise in workplace injuries. Again, no raw stats were presented by the AUTHOR (vs. Goo-gul searches by readers) to determine whether or not the stats are credible.

    The study used by the author, linked in the article and below, is 38 pages long and concludes that there is evidence that shaming is an effective supplement to inspections. The author of the subject study claims that 210 inspections would be needed to obtain the same effect as the ‘shaming’ process. I doubt the validity of that claim because the term ‘shaming’ is used as a separate action from publishing advisory bulletins that indicate workplace injuries and their underlying causes. They are nearly identical in nature and effect. Using a local firm as an example of ‘misconduct’ isn’t as effective as regional or national stats and studies of the factors leading to workplace accidents.

    Next, the author, to no surprise, attacks the Trump Administration’s regulatory rollbacks as a key factor for workplace injury rate increases. That is contrary to the well-known and widely-accepted premise that increased employment rates (due to Trump’s fiscal policies AND REDUCED REGULATION) lead to increased workplace injury rates due to less experienced employees higher accident rate (due to less experience with hazards known to experienced workers). The research and writing of the subject article was almost certainly begun BEFORE Bloomie dropped out of the race to represent the Democrat party to defeat Trump due to only one win on Super Thurs…, er, I just had a Biden Moment, … Tuesday.

    Now that I have made several comments, some based on common sense and widely accepted truths, I expect many down votes, but also, predictably, DEMANDS from the resident trolls on IJ that I prove my points with ‘facts’ they can find on liberally-biased websites.

          Republicans who want to get rid of safety regulations and organizations like OSHA should be ashamed of themselves. They are less than worthless.

          The standards OSHA has developed have saved countless limbs and lives. Only someone who doesn’t values human life would say OSHA is worthless.

            Seriously. Does he really believe lives haven’t been saved by Osha? He knows there are statistics out there mapping the amount of workplace deaths for years before and after OSHA started, right? But I guess as usual, despite his name you can never expect Common Sense.

            I’m guessing he’s one of these brokers that can’t be bothered to actually advise his clients, and maybe that’s why he has such a problem with OSHA. If your clients keep getting in trouble with OSHA, they probably should go somewhere else because you’re doing them a disservice.

    Never heard of OSHA (they’re mentioned in the article)?

    Here’s what they’re about, let me know if it sounds like something you may have heard of: “With the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.”

    The research is suspect. What was the radius of the businesses examined around the cited locations? How many of those businesses received OSHA inspections? Or did the researcher simply look at the OSHA database and see that there were few violations reported? The chance of having an OSHA inspection is miniscule – if the only ‘research’ was counting violations per zip code, or city, or something like that, the results are random at best.

    Who are they shaming them to? Most employers hate OSHA and would most likely feel sympathy. Who reads these press releases? I’ve never read one. As far as reduction in claims, isn’t everyone experiencing this? Here is California the Work Comp market is very soft, prices have plummeted over the past few years. Comp reform measures have helped. The strong economy has also helped. Claims increase when employees fear losing their jobs. That hasn’t been a concern for awhile.

      Of course the press releases are ignored by many companies. Those who are allegedly ‘shamed’ by the reports are going to correct their problems or face rate hikes thru loss of SR credits they were receiving. To publish the record of accidents is not equivalent to proving the company did wrong. In many instances, the accidents were the fault of the careless employee not following safety guides or sheer random bad luck. MONEY, as in PREMIUMS, is the motivating factor. SR credits trumps ‘shaming’ as regards motivating companies.

      That said, IJ should be ashamed that they published a blatantly political ad for Boomie…. which is too little, too late.
