I’m at a loss to think this was not previously considered and even tested to determine the impact on radio/frequency based navigation aids/instruments. Other countries and regions have decided on measures to avoid interference with aircraft navigation.
Sounds to me like the airlines and their lobbying groups are whining about something that really isn’t as catastrophic as they portray — unless the real issue is looking for more money from the government.
Maybe this wouldn’t have been an issue if the FAA had sufficient advance warning of the band(s) Verizon & AT+T would be using for their 5G network? I guess 2 years isn’t long enough? (end sarcasm)

As a former USAF air traffic control radar repairman, I’ll be keeping my feet on the ground.
Life before air conditioning and antibiotics was bad. Life before smart phones and 5G was not bad.
