MARK HERE… NO OFFENSE TO ANYBODY ABOUT WHAT THEY BELIEVE OR DON’T BELIEVE. BUT I GOTTA SAY, PEOPLE BELIEVE 99.9% OF THE TIME IN WHAT THEY WERE RAISED TO BELIEVE AT LEAST TO A LARGE DEGREE… IF YOU’RE BORN MUSLIM THEN ALA IS THE DUDE- BORN HINDI THEN THE FREAK WITH ALL THE ARMS IS YOUR GUY– AND SO ON. SEEING PEOPLE BE “SAVED OR HAVING BEEN SAVED” — WELL, WHEN I WAS 5 I SAW SANTA CLAUSE AND ONLY WHEN I WAS 8 DID MY MOM, DAD, AND OLDER BROTHERS HAVE A GREAT LAUGH WHEN THEY TOLD MY HOW MY FATHER HAD MADE THE THING REAL FOR HIS LAST LITTLE BOY ON CHRISTMAS EVE 1973. DO YOU NEED TO DIE TO FIND OUT THAT THE “HEAVENLY FATHER” IS A WORM EATING YOUR FLESH IN THE GRAVE? THINK MAN, THINK, – AN ALL POWERFUL BEARDED DUDE WHO LISTENS TO YOUR PRAIERS- JESUS CHRIST, CAN I SELL YOU A PIPE DREAM— FOR THE LOW LOW COST OF A SMALL DONATION. IT’S GODS WILL RIGHT, EVERYTHING CAN BE FIXED JUST PRAY MORE TO THE CORRECT EASTER BUNNY- AND THE CORRECT ONE IS ALWAYS YOURS RIGHT? SAD, DUMB AND SAD– RELIGION IS THE WORST THING IN HUMAN HISTORY- MILLIONS IF NOT BILLIONS DEAD FOR DUMBNESS.

Mark, I understand where your first comments (thoughts) were coming from. Most parents mislead their kids with SC and Easter Bunny, tooth fairy, etc but that is part of childhood as well. Bottom line my friend, there is only one true God. He loves you enough that He sent his son to die for you. He is the only one of those that you mentioned that have died and rose again. His resurrection is a fact of history! Roman historians that were anti-christian recorded it.

I have seen people “saved” but redeemed is a better word for me. God cashed in his chips for ME! I know what He has done for me. But I have also seen his miracles completed in front of me. A man had his coke bottle sight improved, two ladies received their hearing, and others had their prayers answered.

I’m not sure why you feel the way you do but I pray that you might see what I have seen before the worm gets to ya.

    Best wishes!

IT’S NOT GOOD TO SIMPLY ALLOW A BLANKET OF “RELIGIOUS PRACTICES” TO EXCUSE ABUSE OR JUST PLAIN INTIMIDATION. WHAT ABOUT THESE GROUPS THAT BELIEVE IN MULTIPLE WIVES AND MINOR WIVES? THAT’S WHAT THEY PRACTICE AND IS PART OF THEIR TRADITIONS. SOUNDS LIKE SHE WAS IN IT FOR THE MONEY ANYWAY BUT THE “HANDS OFF” THING BECAUSE IT’S A CHURCH IS BULL CRAP. ANYBODY WITH HALF A BRAIN KNOWS RELIGION IS A SCAM ANYWAY… ALL MIGHTY CREATOR? DUUHHH! AND THE EASTER BUNNIES REAL TOO RIGHT?

I do not believe churches should have blanket immunity for their actions – that’s how you get priests diddling altar boys and not going to jail. There are certain things that should be protected: speech, gathering, practices on marriage (with a caveat that we’re dealing with adults), and I’m sure there’s a bunch more that isn’t coming to mind right now. The point is that intentional abuse should not be covered.

It would be interesting to read the transcript to see what evidence there was supporting each position. She may have just been in it for the money or the church may have intentionally injured her, I can’t tell. What I can tell is that affording blanket immunity to churches will lead to problems.

I don’t believe that churches should have blanket immunity as they are occupied by people and humans make mistakes and do dumb stuff.

As for religon being a scam, I know my faith is not! I have seen God heal people and I know what He has done in my life. Mark, I am sorry you feel the way you do. Check out your namesake. He was a pretty powerful man!

The problem in Texas is that it is one of the last conservative red neck states. They like their God, guns, and beer. Where is the ACLU? Maybe Texas has a law forbiding an outside group to come across their border. YEEHAW rednecks!

mark is right. religion is a crutch for those people unable to grasp the scientific facts of life.
if you are dumb enough to buy into the garbage they throw at you in this church, then be prepared to take your lumbs (or rug burns, whatever)
if prayer worked, then there would be no strife in this world.

Prayer does work! God answers all prayers, maybe not the way we want Him to. The strife is caused because men don’t honor God. They want to do things their way and when it goes wrong, they want Him to bail them out.

I have seen God heal people in front of me and a group of people. Not once but several times, different people, different locations.

There will come a day when we all admit there is a god. We just need to be ready!

FIRST LET ME SAY THAT I AM A BELIEVER, AND I HAVE BEEN SAVED FOR YEARS…..NOW TO THE POINT THAT TROUBLES ME ABOUT THE CHURCH AND STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. HOW DO WE HAVE A SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE WHEN IN GOD WE TRUST IS PRINTED ON OUR MONEY, THE PLEDGE OF ALEGIENCE SAYS ONE NATION UNDER GOD, AND THE CONSTITUTION REFERS TO GOD. IN TRUTH THERE IS NO SEPARATION…WHY DO WE TRY SO HARD TO MAKE ONE…GOD IS PART OF OUR EVERY DAY LIVES….THIS BRINGS UP ONE OTHER ISSUE..THE CHURCH IS FREE FROM ALL TAXES…I AGREE THAT THE CHURCH SHOULD HAVE NO TAXES, BUT WHEN THEY ENTER THE BIG BUSINESS ARENA AND PURCHASE CONDOS, COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS ECT THEN THAT PART OF THEIR BUSINESS SHOULD BE TAXED JUST AS ALL OTHER BIG BUSINESS IS TAXED…BILLIONS OF DOLLARS ARE LOST EACH YEAR BECAUSE THE CHURCHES ARE ALLOWED TO COMPETE WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND BUSINESSES AND PAY NO TAXES. THE MONEY WE ARE TALKING ABOUT COULD PAY OFF THE NATIONAL DEBT IN JUST A FEW YEARS….WHEN THE CHURCH ACTS AS A BUSINESS IT SHOULD NOT BE EXEMPT FROM TAXES OR THE LAWS OF THE COURT SYSTEM…that, of course, is just one view..

HOW COME EVERYBODY WHO BELIEVES IN THE TOOTH FAIRY BELIEVES THEIR PARTICULAR TOOTH FAIRY IS THE REAL ONE FOR “A RIGHT” REASON OR ANOTHER? AND, OF COURSE THEIR OWN EXPERIENCES “PROVE” IT… ONE, TWO, 250 POINTS OF “EVIDENCE” SURELY MAKE IT “TRUE”… ASK SOMEBODY IN IRAQ WHO IS THE “ONE TRUE” GOD, OR ISREAL, OR RUSSIA, ETC. IT’S ALL THE EASTER BUNNY IN THE END, RELIGION IS CONTROL AND EXPLAINATION OF THE UNEXPLAINABLE, NOT TO MENTION A BUSINESS. I’VE SEEN THAT WITH MY OWN EYES TOO. LOOK AT THE FOREST WILL YA.

Mark, we have a lot of gods, money, power, business, etc. But there is one. Don’t take my word for it. Look at all the scholars that tried to disprove and ended up believing. The fact that the bible has lasted so long when kings and kingdoms tried to destroy it. Even today, the more governments try to destroy the bible and the faith, it floureshes. I am not a bible scholar but I know what I have seen and I know what God has done for me. He’s not the Easter Bunny but he is the reason we celebrate Easter. He sent His son for you and even though Jesus could have called in thousands to help, he stayed on the cross for you and me. Ask Him to show Himself to you and then wait. He will not fail you.

TELL THAT TO THE MILLIONS MURDERED IN THE NAME OF ONE RELIGION OR ANOTHER. MEN CAN SHARE ALL SORTS OF THINGS… BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR “GOD OR GODS” THEY ALWAYS END UP KILLING EACH OTHER IN THE NAME OF SALVATION. MORE PROOF OF THAT THEN ANY CODE OF HAMARABI RE-BRANDED AS THE OLD TESTIMENT– IF YOU LOOK THAT UP IT’S PLAIN AS THE NOSE ON YOUR FACE. AND AS FOR TIME PROVING SOMETHING– THEN I GUESS THERE REALLY IS A “SUN GOD RA” THAT BELIEF LASTED NEARLY 3000 YEARS AND A FEW HAND FULL STILL BELIEVE IT TODAY. TRUTH IS IN EVERY SOCIETY THOUGHOUT TIME SHOWS THE LESS EDUCATED ARE THE MOST RELIGIOUS… HUMM, GODS WILL I GUESS. DOES THE LABEL SANDMAN DESCRIBE WHERE YOUR HEAD IS?

    Mark,

If you have a Bible or can lay your hands on one, look up and read Psalm 14:1.

Those that yell (all caps) usually have little to say.

All the same, no animosity towards you, just sadness for you.

Enjoy the freedom to express yourself – enjoy the Fourth.

First let me say this story makes me embarrased to be a Texan and further to be from Colleyville. This sounds like some whack-job soap opera. It is absolutely mind-boggling how a jury would award $300,000 to a clearly troubled youth due to “carpet burns” incurred during some sort of cult exorcism.

To the commenter who noted church and state should not be separate, I encourage you to move to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They embrace your “goal” wholeheartedly. “In God We Trust” by the way represents a secular, multi-religious God (hence our freedom of religion), and in fact I don’t think it was even added until later. Please don’t forget that the reason our great nation exists was to escape the religious tyranny of England — our forefathers came here for the very reason that church and state should never be intertwined.

I find it interesting that those with biblical names are attacking it. Matt, check your history, the country started for freedom of, not from, religon.
Although some of our founding fathers were not “christians”, they still accepted a divine presence. Look at our Dec of Inde, (since that is why we are supposed to celebrate the 4th). See the reference to God. I care if you don’t believe, but that is your choice. But don’t tell me I can’t or prevent me from openly worshipping the God of creation.

Being from Texas, you must have a real tough time with all those “believers” around you.

Why is it so important for some of you to denigrate the belief systems of others? I am not religious and don’t attend church so I have no fish to fry here. We have freedom of religion in the U.S., not freedom from religion. Too bad that what you consider someone else’s ignorant beliefs offend you, but that’s your problem, not theirs.
I think Rosie should be have an exorcism. Whatever devils she has in there are at least as verbally offensive as the one in the Exorcist.

Sand, I am certainly not saying someone can’t openly celebrate their faith. In fact I am saying the exact opposite. I think EVERYONE is entitled to celebrate their own faith, regardless of what that is. What I am saying is we have separation of church and state so that such freedom of religion is guaranteed.

If, to choose a random denomination, the Methodist interpretation of Christianity was our “national religion,” people would certainly be less free to celebrate other faiths. This is why we, as a nation, do not subscribe to any one religion, and why the “In God We Trust” slogan is intentionally vague in that regard.

Whether you are Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, or yes, even if you believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster, you have the right to celebrate such faith in the United States. We are not, and hopefully NEVER will be, a theocracy. The day we have a national religion or the separation of church & state is removed is the day America dies.

Matt, Ours was a Christian nation. Christians allowed all others to come in. Now Christianity is being punished. We can’t talk on public sidewalks in some cities, we can’t rent school classrooms in some cities, kids can’t put a reference to their faith in their school artwork or it will be given a failing grade. These are just a few of the reasons our country is failing and Matt, when the country does totally turn its back on God, then you will see the end of America. That day is coming soon!

I respect your right to believe what you want, please respect mine.

“May it be to the world, what I believe it will be, (to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all,) the signal of arousing men to burst the chains under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessings and security of self-government.”

    — Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to Roger Weightman reflecting on the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, one of many similar quotes.

It is also worth noting that in a speech during a July 4, 2008 celebration, George W Bush took some artistic liberty with the quote, which he changed to:

“May it be to the world, what I believe it will be — to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all — the Signal of arousing men to burst the chains, and to assume the blessings and security of self-government.”
