Funding of $1.8 million for the completion of the Bayou Chene Flood Protection System in Louisiana has been approved by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Authority.
St. Mary Levee District executive director Hillary Thibodeaux tells the Daily Review the money will be used for engineering and design services.
“We’re obviously very excited to receive these federal funds, especially in this poor economy,” Thibodeaux said.
The levee district is a joint applicant for the development authority money in partnership with the Terrebonne Levee and Conservation District.
Total cost of the project is $5 million.
An EDA statement said funding of the project will support expansion in the area’s oil and gas, shipbuilding and seafood industries. Frequent flooding in the coastal area should be relieved when the project is completed, EDA said.
“This is a great example of how government should work: local ideas coming forward without being constrained by government red tape for the good of the people,” said U.S. Rep. Jeff Landry, R-La.
