There is no possible way a person can drive a vehicle and still text on a phone. In fact, it is pretty hard to talk on a cell and still keep your mind on the driving since your mind is somewhere else. If a drunk is driving and texting, they are twice as dangerous. There should be an extra fine after an accident if the officer finds evidence the driver was texting while driving. A carrier should be able to non-renew a policy if they have to pay for an accident caused by this behavior. If not cancel, put the insured in the highest rate tier.
You are right Al. Some states have passed bills dealing with texting. I was shocked to learn that Texas has not yet passed one. It is a joke that Texting is taken so cavalierly by many people and they fail to see how dangerous it is. Perhaps MVR’s should identify a texting ticket or a CLUE report on an accident have an entry on it on at fault due to texting. A carrier could look at that and say HMM. Do we really want this customer? They could either uprate it into a higher tier or decline it. Progressive would take them for a price and maybe that is where they should be.
It’s kind of interesting – my 7 year old daughter pronounces the name of the state as “Textas” – I guess it kind of fits, after reading this.
Hopefully, all states will pass some serious laws regarding texting and driving. A good indicator of how serious an issue is taken is by the punishment given for the offense.

I wonder what it is like to be a passenger in a car with someone who is constantly on their cell and trying to talk or text while driving. I would not be in the car for long and would ask the driver to stop and let me out. As I travel around in town, I notice other drivers. It seems at least 1 out of 3 are on their cell while driving. Probably half of them try to text while driving. This is out of control and cells are extremely addictive.

Maybe texting drivers should face the same penalties as drunk drivers – they’re both extremely dangerous to others on the roads.
