A fast-moving line of intense thunderstorms flooded streets, knocked out power to more than 30,000 people in southeast Louisiana on April 24 and spawned two tornadoes that damaged homes and businesses in Jefferson Parish.
No injuries were reported. Kenner officials say the storm did major damage to 11 homes and minor damage to another 11.
The National Weather Service confirms that much of the damage in Kenner was from a tornado with winds reaching 90 miles an hour. A second, weaker, tornado hit 15 minutes later in Metairie.
The Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) is advising homeowners and businesses that tornado damage is covered under the typical homeowners insurance policy and coverage does not have to be purchased separately. Tornadoes generally cause wind damage. If a roof is blown off and a home’s contents are destroyed by rain, the damage is covered by standard policies, the department said.
Policyholders with questions about tornado damage are advised to contact the LDI.
Entergy Corp., the utility serving most of the affected area, reported about 5,500 customers without power in Louisiana late in the evening April 24, down from more than 32,000 as the storms moved through at midday.
The line of storms prompted several tornado watches and warnings.
