A terrible chapter that Baylor is trying to put behind them. They didn’t properly vette recruits checking on background or they never would have recruited thugs to play for them.

Don’t even try to peddle that load of excusatory tripe. Baylor knew full well what they were doing when they deliberately lowered their academic and character admission standards for football recruits in an attempt to build a top-flight program. They just didn’t expect it to blow up in their faces the way it did.

We’re talking about crimes involving physical assault, armed robbery, burglary, drugs, guns, and most notably, sexual violence against women. 52 rapes by at least 31 players between 2011 and 2014, including five gang rapes? This isn’t some “honest mistake” or someone being “asleep at the wheel”! Much of this didn’t even come to light for a good while because the athletic department was trying so desperately to cover it up and keep it quiet, but it just finally grew too big for them to keep a lid on it.

And all of this at “the nation’s largest Baptist school”? Do you recall Southern Methodist University’s issues with its football program and the NCAA Death Penalty? Only in Texas, I guess.

By the way, “vette” is short for “Corvette”. When you “vet” something, you make a thorough examination of it.
