Poor man was carrying less than 2 ounces of marijuana. He never should have been in jail in the first place. This would have been a mere ticket or no arrest at all in many jurisdictions across the country.

“Detention officers placed Scott on a restraint bed, used pepper spray and covered his face with a spit mask. ”

Wait … they restrained him and THEN pepper sprayed him???

I have an adult son living at home who is autistic. It takes very little to cause confusion. Once that happens it takes special care to keep this from exploding into terror and outburst of violent behavior.

The WORST thing to do would be to tie him down and cover his face. At that point he would have the cognitive ability of a wild animal. The only way to calm him would be to shoot him with a tranquilizer dart from a distance and let it kick in.

Every Police Department in America should have a trained mental health crisis team. To be called in similar to SWAT in situations where the person has mental issues. Training each Officer in de-escalation is not sufficient, they are rightly focused on enforcement and true violent criminals. They should be trained to call the mental health team first.
