Talk about stiff punishments. For $11,000, was it worth it 80 years in prison and 1.5 Million in fines.

Great deterrents. Way to go George Bush and FEMA!

All the talk about the insurance companies failing to settle claims from Katrina – so little talk about the thousands of folks who have taken advantage of many generous programs to help. I have personally seen this after a major storm, folks will try to take as much advantage of the system as they can – usually resulting in lots of undetected crime. If more of these folks are prosecuted then maybe, just maybe, others will hesitate before they try to rape the system.

I live in Iowa. We’ve had a few Katrina “victims” who moved here before Katrina who filed bogus claims. This is one area of the disaster that has not been given enough attention.

Wow and I thought only the insurance companies “committed” fraud with respect to Katrina. Love to read what looney tune Kim Daivd has to say about this article.

You know that Kim David will say that the program wasn’t explained to them properly. The fine print was just not understandable. Of course they committed fraud! You should be ashamed Mary.

I think both men should receive their just punishment. There were/are hundreds of thousands of people who really needed the assistance, and could not/did not receive it. My sister, for instance, who still cannot live in her house, but; still has to make morgage payments. Where is the justice? The insurance companies are coming out smelling like roses, and paying only a fraction of what they should. Some lives will never be the same.

Josh – did she purchase flood insurance? That is probably the only question that needs to be asked…

Part of the litigation procedures have been that the HO and the flood have both paid out what ‘they feel’ is their share, only to leave the homeowner still needing to come up with thousands. If a house was insured to full replacement value of $200,000 on both policies. HO pays out $75,000 saying that’s the damage caused by wind. Flood pays out $50,000 saying that’s the flood damage. So the homeowner has $125,000 to build a $200,000 house. Throw in the deductibles and they’re never going to move back into their home.
