The federal government in very involved with Railroads. There is a wealth of Federal RR legislation aimed at protecting the RR from going under, as they provide transport service for many industrial materials, chemicals, etc.
Who do they need to protect and from what? Why is the federal government paying out big bucks for something that should clearly be handled within the state budget?
Note that a majority of train/car accidents involve the car running into the train.
What is happening is people think that they can beat the train across the track. Unfortunately, because of their size the speed the train is moving at is deceptive and it looks like they are moving slower then they truely are. More then anything some of that money should be put into training the new generations of drivers what NOT to do.
