At least it’s a start. Frankly if Citizens charged sound rates it might encourage policyholders to shop for a private company. I estimate 70% of the standard PLA would qualify for private insurance at a competitive rate. If it wasn’t for “good neighbors” filling Citizens they’d be a much smaller liability.

Maybe then we could get rid of the fly by night start ups in Florida.

Wait, the original request wasn’t supported because policyholders couldn’t afford bigger increases right now? What about the surcharges the rest of Florida residents are paying to support Citizens?

It’s the problem that everyone in this industry has with the socialist policies of Gov. Crist. Homeowners need to face the fact that we live on a peninsula that can be hit from either side by a major hurricane. Rates must be higher to pay claims when one of those hurricanes does hit.

Unfortunately, Citizens Property is probably the best avenue for Policyholders as with some private carriers which write business at a very low premium to compete with Citizens will either go belly up or are ordered to liquidate. Florida should open the doors to the private Industry so that carriers can write business and lower the premiums as they spread the risk.

Well stated. If they do not have the financial means to live in Florida (in part, because of the hurricane threat and related insurance costs), they need to seriously consider relocation to an area that may be more affordable for them.

This is not an issue of sympathy or lack of it. It is stark reality. Voluntarism is one thing–government forcing one to be “his/her brother’s keeper” is altogether different.

Why is it that so many Floridians who passionately oppose the public option in health care reform embrace it when it comes to buying their homeowners insurance from Citizens? Amazing how financial self interest can make conservatives swing both ways.
