This is a great idea. The insurance industry should be helping the fire & rescue service more than they do. The first responders minimize the losses once they occur. They are there not only with fires but auto accidents, general liability claims, workers compensation claims etc. When anything bad happens who do you call but the fire department. More resources in their hands means less severe claims when they reach us.

I suggest the program be re-evaluated and some if not all the funds be used to help homeowners install residential fire sprinkler systems in their homes. Fire Fighters do a great job if they can get to the fire very quickly, however the adverage response time is 6 minutes plus and death occurs in 3-4 minutes in a fire. In a fire a sprinkler activates in 30-60 seconds and starts to control the fire and save the occupants lives.

Fire Marshall Biggers comments are well taken. The only problem is the cost. I don’t know what it would cost to retrofit a single family dwelling with a sprinkler system but let’s say it can be done for $3,000.00 per household or whatever figure you choose then multiply that number times the number of households in America. I don’t think even Mr. Obama has that kind of money.
