Florida Resurrects Insurance Rate Comparison Web Site

Florida residents will soon have a Web site tool to help them compare homeowners insurance coverage.

The Florida Office on Insurance Regulation is launching an interactive computer program called the Consumer HomeOwners Insurance Comparison Electronic System, or CHOICES.

Consumers can select between two standards risks and pick any one of Florida’s 67 counties and see the rates of the leading insurers in those areas.

The launching of CHOICES hasn’t been without controversy.

Earlier this year, Gov. Rick Scott quietly pulled the plug on a consumer-oriented Web site that let homeowners compare coverage options and prices. Former Gov. Charlie Crist started the Web site in 2007. Scott’s spokesperson said he had the site taken down since it couldn’t keep up with rate increases. The new site, however, will retain many of the old features.
