why would any kid allow this? much less a second kid seeing it done like the first and allow themselves the same harm? it’s unfortunate that folks think a bad event is a good event, yet when you step back it’s not. the 17 yr old should have known better, especially when we are talking about kids at a camp for those military member that are deployed…

Were you there when this happened? Maybe you should give the benefit of the doubt to the people involved in this case who witnessed it, investigated it, listened to the testimony etc. Do you ever see a situation where it is appropriate to bring a lawsuit?

It happened to me when I was at summer camp one year. I certainly didn’t “allow” it or ask for it. Another kid approached me from behind and just started strangling me. He was much stronger than me and I couldn’t do anything to stop him. I passed out. He slapped me a few times to wake me up. Would have been nice to sue him, but it would have been my word against his, and 30 years ago, I think the general reaction would have just been “Boys will be boys.”

I do believe the camp had a responsibility to know what kind of “counselors” they were employing. However, if they can prove they did a background check on this kid and all was clear, then the blame should be all on him.

I dislike frivolous lawsuits as much as anyone but isn’t this pretty clear. The counselor committed a negligent act while working on behalf of the camp.

When I was at a camp many years ago, the counselor was brutal. He enjoted smearing limburger cheese under our noses. I remember that when another boy and I were “fighting” he told us to shake hands and when we did, he banged our heads together so hard that we were both temporarily knocked out. It’s tough being at the mercy of an adult bully when you’re 10 years old but 50 years ago, you took your licks, gritted your teeth, and moved on. I never told my parents but I should have. I still remember his name.
