Being a motorcyle owner for over 40 years, I find it patently untrue that motorcyclist will avoid West Virginia, just because you have to wear a helmet. New York is a mandatory helmet state (and has been for over 25 yrs) and I know of at least 4 Large motorcycle rallys (Am JAm in Lake George for one)that draw in thousands of motorcycling tourism, helmets and all.

Perhaps New York could double the number of large rallys they host if they changed the helmet law.

I personally wouldn’t ride without my helmet on and I certainly advise everyone to wear a helmet but if you are willing to assume responsibility for your actions, you should be able to do as you want.

Let me put it in another context. Head injuries from motorcycle accidents are less than 1% of those from motor vehicle accidents. So if the hypocrites in NY that claim they are worried about the medical costs of riders going without they would be consistent and require them in cars and trucks. Than tell me how many would vacation in NY when they have to bring a helmet to cross the state line.

Law makers should ride around town in their car on a nice 97 degree day with no AC, with the windows and top down, and then get in a traffic jam miles long, traveling 3mph. Now put on a helmet, and see how we riders feel….

I always wear a helmet when I ride, but I always wonder if those people who ride at 70 with the wind in their hair insist that they have one when playing football because they might get hurt?

I moved back up here from fla. And i rode without a helment it was my choice and i think everyone should have that choice to me your less restricked and can see better and at 70 mile hr on a bike a bad wreck i dont think a helment is going to make alot of difference

I am planning a vacation for a group of 14 riders. I would like to see WV. I don’t want to wear a helmet and neither do several of our friends. I’m hoping the WV helmet law will change like MI recently changed theirs. Will we still come to WV if they don’t change the law?? Not likely. I also agree with what Robert said above. And to add to that, motorcyclist have to wear eye protection. When it’s extremely hot, with a helmet on, glasses get so fogged up you can’t see. Now that’s safe; NOT!
