You’re correct Speedo, it is hardly ridiculous. It is par for the course. There was no law against this organization operating the way it does. It’s taken 10 years for the KY DOI to try to stop them. The only reason they give is that they think people might think they are buying something else. I highly doubt any of the 800 members in KY think they are buying a Humana policy…what a joke. Maybe Humana and Anthem just don’t appreciate the Christian concept here…
The law should not apply to a religious based organization. The concept of separation of church and state is only enforced at to the benefit of non-Christians.
You don’t understand what separation of church means. It means there won’t be a government sanctioned religion, not that all “religious” activity will be tolerated.
Secondly, this isn’t even a Christian principle, which people are usually afraid to point out, or unaware of. Jesus did not say to provide assistance to people who were perfect citizens, as defined by each person individually, and in fact provided his healing powers to criminals, prostitutes, and the poor.
no one is perfect UW, we are all sinners in need of a Savior, I think the Christian principle that Medi-share refers to is Christians helping, supporting, and praying for other Christians in their times of need. I do not believe this type of cost share program is only available to “perfect” people, just people who are trying to live moral lives

Government is the new religion that must be worshiped without question.
Funds not regulateed can disappear, and frequently do. This has nothing to do with government, it has to do with protecting people against fraud, and yes, Christians do occationally commit fraud.
He didn’t say it HAS disappeared, he said it’s disappearing. You, sir, are NOT clueless. You intentionally changed what he said to support your point. People with weakness in arguing back have to do that kind of thing. And, yes, it IS disappearing. It has not, YET, disappeared.
That is technically incorrect. Christians have salvation, and a promise of eternal life or “going to heaven” if you will. Christians, while in general trying to live a moral lifestyle, still have the capacity to commit all manner of sin, and often they do. Anyway . . . .
Medi-share may seem like, pardon the pun, a gift from God. A faith-based community of strangers banding together to help one another cover their medical costs, but enrollment does come with a hitch. Those who wish to become members must be able to prove their faith in the following ways:
Regularly attend services and actively support a ministry
Complete a Statement of Faith and have a verifiable testimony of a relationship with the Lord
Believe biblical doctrines that view the body as a pure entity and treat it as such
Not engage in sexual intercourse outside of a Christian marriage
Not use tobacco or abuse drugs or alcohol
Medi-share is indeed a unique program for providing assistance with medical care, but unlike health insurance programs this route uses blatant discrimination to prevent certain individuals from benefiting from its service. Mychristiancare.org specifically points out that only those engaging in sexual intercourse within a “Christian” marriage are allowed to join. This immediately eliminates gay, lesbian, and transgender individuals from enrolling in Medi-share. The program also places limits on services it covers based upon religious beliefs and states specifically that abortions will not be covered under any circumstance.
To be clear, Medi-share is not an insurance program. Medi-share operates as a non-profit group and while members pay into a group fund each month, the money is never Medi-share’s money. Furthermore, Medi-share is not required to pay any bill, nor keep cash reserves on hand.REF:http://www.newsonhealthcare.com/the-ins-and-outs-of-medi-share/
It is a Christian based group. Christian meaning you have to be one to join. It is not discriminatory, it is what it is. The people you have used as examples are not Christians and therefore, do not qualify. Should I scream discrmination every time I get turned down for insurance? I am glad to know they will not be covering abortions. Thank God there is a group that actually stands behind their beliefs!
Whatever do you mean by “gay, lesbian… individuals?” The requirement is clear, you cannot engage in sexual behavior outside of Christian marriage. That CAN include “gay” and lesbian individuals if they abide by these rules and adhere to a Christian world view, if by “gay” and lesbian you mean people who merely experience same-sex attraction.
“Transgenders” are just another universe altogether. The microscopic percent of the population that is truly hermaphroditic is not the same as “transgender,” which is a mental disorder that should not be encouraged.
A religious based organization has the right to set guidelines for it’s membership. The baptist church requires baptism by emersion for membership, even if one has been baptized by other means previously. One has a choice to follow the doctrines of the church and join, or not. Same with Medishare.
My husband and I have been with Medishare since a year ago May. We pay over $700 a month for basically not having to pay penalties due to refusing Obama care. The money we pay-in pays for other members’ medical costs–amounts of which we are not privy to; also, though not posted anywhere, they will opt to cover only on issues–not preventative health care. I am currently paying off a large sum for mammogram and an OBGYN exam they didn’t cover. So, basically, this is to cover you if you have an issue, however what I have read here is that they can opt NOT to cover you even then. This is very disturbing on so many levels. Obama care was extremely cost prohibitive since we are self employed. It has been incredibly disheartening.
The government cannot force you to pay the lack of insurance penalties. They only course of action they have is to deduct the penalty from your refund. Thus if you ensure you’re not owed a refund then you don’t pay a penalty.
we are evaluating medi-share but are having a hard time finding bad reviews. would you be willing to share your experience with me, ie, what was the reason given for your obgyn exam not being covered?
You won’t find much in the way of bad reviews. It isn’t an insurance company, so it is hard to prove a complaint (it’s not like you get a policy in the mail that you can take to your lawyer if they don’t pay up). The sort of folks who buy from a “ministry” are the same sort of folks who don’t like to post bad stuff about other people on the internet. For the most part, the medi-share deal has worked the way it was designed. Where you could possibly run into a problem is if you are the unfortunate soul who incurs a major, catastrophic illness that costs millions; things like closed-head wounds, or a premature baby. As long as you are comfortable with the fact that there are some restrictions/limitations to the coverage, you will probably be OK. The reason her ob/gyn bill wasn’t paid was because it was “routine” in nature, and most of the sharing ministries like medi-share won’t allow routine screenings like mamograms, pap smears, colonoscopies, etc., to be shared (covered).
Since I adhere to Christian beliefs and values, and should easily be accepted, I most likely will apply for Medi-Share. My experience with United American Ins. a year ago is one reason. UA paid $300 on a claim of $2000 for minor surgery. Too many loopholes and fine print in commercial policies in favor of the companies. Medi-Share has their criteria just like any other organization. I can’t get group insurance through Microsoft because I don’t work for them. Well I buy their products; using one now. And why should I be grouped into a class of people that just ask for health problems like smokers, drug abusers, etc. If Big Gov wants me covered, I want Medi-Share. That is the best way for me, knowing that nothing is perfect in this world. Commercial, for-profit insurance companies that are listed on the stock exchange are inherently flawed.
When Medi-Share is Reviewed we find that it may be an alternative to health insurance, but we want to make this very clear IT IS NOT HEALTH INSURANCE. Furthermore, Medi-share Is Not Required To Pay ANY Bill, nor keep cash reserves on hand.
True, however all eligible expenses (determined by guidelines -read by members before being accepted) have been shared by members at 100% for 22 years. Christians don’t want to pay for abortion! Why should we be forced to? We choose to come together as a group of faith believing and like minded individuals…we choose to help one another. Why are you painting that as a negative? Get together with your friends and family and choose to help each other when you are in need. There is no law against it. ALSO: FYI Medi-Share (and other programs like it) is an approved program and alternative to the supposed Affordable Health Care Act.Section 1501, page 148. It is also a PPO program and works better than most insurances as eligible needs are always shared at 100% after meeting the annual responsibility amount each year.
Do know that Medi-Share has a lot of gotcha’s, too. I compared my current Anthem BC&BS plan to Medi-Share, and Anthem is actually, factually, a better deal for me. Premiums are almost exactly the same, and I have no concerns over pre-existing conditions, prescriptions drugs, or having multiple large-claim incidences in a single year (you know, like having an appendectomy in March, and breaking a leg in October; with Anthem, my out of pocket max is on an annual basis, not a per claim or per visit basis). And yes, the $386/month that Anthem wants is expensive, but Medishare want’s $360/month, and has a LOT of gaps in coverage; not to mention that a large claim (e.g., $20,000 or $100,000) will definitely cost me more out-of-pocket with Medishare. The idea of insurance is to protect against catastrophic loss, and Medi-Share has shortcomings in that category. I have no idea why Medi-Share is so expensive, because it ought to be much less expensive that Anthem, because of Medi-Share’s pre-existing condition exclusions, and lower payout when a claim occurs, and the supposedly lower risk (on average) people it insures.
[@ c smith] The out of pocket limits with Medi-Share can be significant. There’s the obvious deductible. However, there’s more. Each and every visit to a provider after the deductible is met still costs $35 ($135 for ER) for the “insured” individual. Also, for bills incurred prior to meeting the deductible, $35 ($135 for an ER) of each provider visit is NOT counted towards the deductible. If you have a large claim, it typically means you have a lot of medical visits to doctors, therapists, etc. Another thing is that prescriptions are only covered for six months per condition. So, if you are diagnosed with diabetes, you have get six months worth of medicine, then you have to pay all the cost for the rest of your life? Those are examples.
Robert…I don’t know how you get such low prices for oBummercare? Its mandated, there’s NO competition, every company essentially has to offer the same thing at the same levels, and charges effectively the SAME price! My families costs tripled with the CHEAPEST oBummercare plan (when we had a mid level Aetna plan) compared to what we were paying for our Aetna plan, and that INCLUDES the deductible Tripling as WELL!!!
Either you are being subsidized…by us TAX payers, or something smells FISHY about your story!!!
OK. Here’s the deal. I purchased a very solid insurance policy before Obamacare was passed into law. As such, the policy is grandfathered, and is NOT an Obamacare plan, per se. The policy has no pre-existing conditions (I’ve had it for more than a year), has no maximum benefit, and I can go to virtually every provider in the nation and be considered “in network.” While I actually would qualify for a subsidy if I purchased through an exchange, and would certainly save money on premiums if I did, I chose to keep the grandfathered policy and maintain access to providers and a substantially lower out-of-pocket maximum. No grandfathered policy is eligible to participate in the subsidy program, so I get no subsidy. I’m not interested in getting into a pissing match with you, and your allegations that I’m dishonest are not appreciated.
Isn’t there any insurance company who isn’t affiliated with Obamacare in some way?obamacare is requiring a microchip in the hand( mark of the beast). Plewse comment.
No Carol, Obamacare doesn’t require (or even promote) a microchip in the hand or anywhere else. Obamacare has a lot of very real problems that you can write about, there’s no need to make up conspiracy-theory lies about it.
Well Mr. Nobody, you picked a fine reason for not moving to Kentucky. Totally ignorant reason, but still, a fine reason. First of all, Medishare is hardly a reason to base any life decisions upon. Second of all, the article is dated in October of 2012. The matter has long been resolved (democrat governors who love Obama took issue with such an alternative) and Medishare is available to people in Kentucky.
I had an individual plan from Humana that was grandfathered under affordable health care act. It too was going up every year for a higher deductible (e.g., when I got this plan in 2008 it cost me $182/mth for a $2,000 deductible and $1,000 out-of-pocket by August, 2015 it cost me $560/mth for a $2,500 deductible and a $2,000 deductible and higher co-pays) – it was still cheaper than healthcare.gov plans – the cheapest being $1,200 month for $5,000 deductible plan for my area. Guess what, Humana canceled all their grandfathered plans and I now have to find another plan. Since I was pretty much paying all my medical bills anyway (with my high deductibles/out-of-pocket and high co-pays), it is a lot cheaper for me to either go with a non-qualified plan or a system like Medi-Share + a supplemental plan for catastrophic illnesses like cancer, heart issues, etc.
Pharmaceuticals have bamboozled the nations and will destroy all competition and this judge is a paid pharma goon from hell. People have a right to be healed instead of being poisoned to death by pharmaceuticals with its fraudulent research concerning disease, vaccines and poisons for medicines. People are controlled by voodoo like curses of these lying researches who by the way have no cures and do not even know why you are sick, yet they push pharma like candy that leads to death and destruction. I pray in Jesus name people wake up from their slumber induced by fear and start taking control of their health. Good nutrition can counter pharma poisons and that is why pharma has taken over even the Dept of Ag so they can poison our land, foods and air. The pharma employees head up the Federal agencies like FDA, CDC, EPA, NIH and more. Wake up sheep. Watch a few truth videos about how you are being duped, poisoned and murdered and duped into sacrificing your children to satan on the alters of abortion, vaccines and poisons for medicines. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6J_7PvWoMw&t=1081s and http://VaccineTruth.123Look.com Medi-Share is legite, it pays and it will pay for natural and safe doctors. That is why pharma is trying to steal your ability to get well. I personally chose to learn all I could and I just google natural and safe cures for whatever symptoms and change my diet accordingly. The first diet change is always STOP intaking poisons so the body can throw off the poisons that are causing the problems. Your liver can only process so much poison and pharma overloads our livers.
I have a Florida Blue SILVER plan which is pretty good, minimal copays and minimal out of pocket. Cost $604 a month for me. Medishare wants $580 and has exclusions, family out of pocket amounts, discounted only doctors office visits for wellness, and only discounted pharmacy. With a HBP and Cholesterol Pill, Medishare only saves me $24 a month, but limits the hell out of everything and increases my copays. Of you are older, and have the usual ailments, forget it. Medishare probably works well for teens, tweens, college people and very young adults, not worth a damn for grandpa.
Its obvious by the language in your comment that you aren’t a Christian. Every insurance plan has exclusions and out of pocket expenses. There’s no other plan that I know of that doesn’t use my money to pay for someone to have an abortion or to pay for someone’s abuse of drugs or alcohol. I welcome a company that prays for all of their customers
medishare is profiting of the $50 application fee. People are desperate to save money on their insurance, people will apply, pay the $50 application fee and the insurance will be denied. My husband and I are healthy people with no pre-existing conditions and they denied our application. Stay away!
My wife purchased MediShare, and about six month later she broke her leg. MediShare always wants to pray for you, but they do not want to pay for you. They lied to us for the better part of a year before they finally paid about $9,600 on a bill that was over $35,000. We paid the $10,000 deductible plus about $5,000 more for the surgeon, PT, and rental of walking assistance equipment. In my opinion, they are a complete scam, and falsely advertising they’ve always paid all the eligible claims. All our claims were eligible per their own documents. I think that they think they can just wear you down by giving you the run around until you give up. No wonder many Christians avoid companies who claim to be wonderful because they are “Christians.”

So the people have figured out a way to help themselves without government assistance, and that’s a violation. Ridiculous.
Hardly ridiculous. The department and the judge are enforcing Kentucky state law. If people don’t like the law, change it.
