Florida Woman Sues Airline Over Rough Landing

July 25, 2013

A Tampa-area woman has sued US Airways, saying she was injured after a rough landing at Tampa International Airport.

Nancy Linker, who is 48, said in the lawsuit that she was hospitalized after the front tires of US Airways Flight 1241 blew out upon touchdown in June 2009. According to the suit filed in Hillsborough County Circuit Court, the plane’s front gear collapsed, forcing it to slam “hard onto the runway with tremendous force.”

The Tampa Bay Times reported that Linker is seeking damages for negligence. The suit doesn’t specify Linker’s injuries, but it states she has suffered disfigurement and “loss of ability to earn money.”

US Airways spokesman Bill McGlashen said the airline had not reviewed the case so he couldn’t comment.

The flight was coming from Philadelphia.

After the flight’s rough landing, the runway had to be closed for about eight hours. At the time, an airline spokesman said that no passengers were injured.

Fellow Tampa resident and celebrity pitchman Billy Mays was also on the flight, which was coming from Philadelphia. He told a local television station: “All of a sudden as we hit, you know, it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head.”

Mays died the next day of heart disease. The medical examiner found no evidence of head trauma in Mays from the landing.
