I love to see Big Tobacco punished for selling a deadly product, but I hate to see smokers or their families rewarded for doing anything as obviously hazardous (and stupid) as smoking.
And seeing the states spend their previous tobacco settlement payments on things not related to tobacco problems is also wrong.

Well aren’t you all self-righteous and high and mighty? Do you know how addictive cigarettes are? And they’re made that way on purpose. Nicotine is added and nicotine is a DRUG. Get down off your high horse and try to have some empathy for the weak-minded that likely got hooked on cigarettes when they were in their teens. People like you make me sick.

I don’t have empathy for smokers. The hazardous to your health warnings have been around since the 70s. Yes, it’s difficult to quit, but not impossible. And, yes, I’m a former smoker. I get that tobacco companies withheld information, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was known smoking is linked to cancer. These settlements are not right. What happened to personal responsibility?

For once, we agree on something.

My father was a smoker who quit cold turkey with help from our family. It can be done. I do wonder if it is easier to quit now with electronic cigarettes.

Even with today’s warnings there are a lot of smokers….. It is the old you can lead a horse to water…… We ALL make choices and I think if we are at all informed of the possible consequences of using a product or participating in an activity (tobacco, alcohol, drugs, bungee jumping, etc.) lawsuits shouldn’t be permitted.

I think we also need to realize that if a “bad” company such as a tobacco company can be made to pay outrageous amounts as punitive damages, it sets strong precedence to do it to other companies, say a hospital or general motors.
