7 Arrested in Georgia for Insurance Fraud in Staged Car Crash

March 24, 2015

Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens says seven central Georgia residents accused of staging a car crash have been charged with insurance fraud.

Hudgens said in a statement that the crash on Sept. 5, 2013 involved a 1998 BMW and a rented U-Haul truck that led to two insurance companies paying more than $8,000 in fraudulent claims.

Commissioner’s spokesman Glenn Allen says the office began investigating the case in October 2014 and got one of the suspects to confess in the scheme. Allen says additional suspects also gave inconsistent statements about what happened in the crash when they were interviewed.

Officials say the seven suspects have surrendered to authorities and will be prosecuted by the Bibb County District Attorney’s Office.
