My husband and I wanted to drive for Uber but found out USAA, our auto insurance carrier, will not cover us once we turn on the Uber app. Do you know of any insurance company that will provides auto insurance for Uber drivers?
Uber’s policy (the one that I read) kicks in when passengers are in the car. Your personal auto policy will stop providing BOTH liability and physical damage coverage as soon as the app is turned on – so Marlene, there is a gap in coverage. ISO has published some TNC (Transportation Network Company) endorsements to add to a personal auto policy that insurance companies may use (if they want to write this coverage). USAA rolled out the TNC coverage in one or two states, so they may offer it in your state in the future (I know — doesn’t help now). Since this coverage is a problem all over the country, try calling your state Department of Insurance to see if they can tell you which companies are writing the type of coverage that you need.
I just read the optional coverages through Lyft (another TNC company). They have an insurance option that the driver can purchase the will have coverage start as soon as the driver turns on the application. Drivers need to remember that the physical damage coverage is also voided on a personal auto policy as soon as the application is turned on – so buy the liability and the physical damage.

I’m pretty sure Uber’s coverage kicks in as soon as you turn on the app.
No, it does’nt. This is the famous gap: if the app is on, personal wont cover, but Uber will only cover if you have a riding passenger.
Most of the commercial companies I know rate uber drivers as a taxi service.

Althought I know about the gap, how will your insurer know that your app was on???
