Above Average Year for Tornadoes in Alabama; 53 Confirmed So Far

April 25, 2019

Alabama already has exceeded its yearly average for tornadoes with more than 50 twisters verified in the state so far in 2019.

The National Weather Service tweets that Alabama has had 53 total tornadoes so far this year. That compares to the yearly average of 47 tornadoes.

The state recorded 28 tornadoes in March, which was the highest total for that month since 1950. The total includes the monster storm that killed 23 people in Lee County on March 3.

The weather service says the state has had 16 twisters so far this month.

The 53 tornadoes verified before the end of April ranks second all-time behind 2011, when an outbreak of more than 60 tornadoes killed about 250 people statewide on April 27.
