Georgia Firefighter Charged with Arson of His Own Home After Filing $700,000 Claim

March 16, 2023

One year after Georgia volunteer firefighter Todd Anthony said a kitchen fire burned down his house and he filed a $700,000 insurance claim, authorities have charged the man with arson.

Anthony, 56, of Greensboro, was arrested and charged with insurance fraud and arson in connection with the March 2022 blaze, the Georgia Insurance Commissioner’s Office said in a bulletin.

“Following a nearly year-long joint investigation with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, burn-pattern analysis of the incident proved Mr. Anthony’s story to be misleading,” said Insurance Commissioner John King. “Investigators determined the fire did not originate in the kitchen and instead was intentionally set in other parts of the home. It is evident that the suspect set fire to the residence in an attempt to obtain an insurance payout of approximately $700,000.”
