Washington Insurance Commissioner Deborah Senn has issued a final report on the international effort to recover Holocaust Era insurance policies, urging an international commission to speed up its claims process and force insurers to publish records from that time.
“The status report that I have prepared on the Holocaust insurance claims process is a timely and honest appraisal not only of what has been accomplished, but also what remains unfulfilled,” Commissioner Senn said. Commissioner Senn, who launched the international claims process three years ago, is leaving her statewide office next week.
She said the report, “A Status Report on Holocaust-Era Insurance Claims,” represents her view that justice will ultimately prevail. She said the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, which became the driving force behind the formation of the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims, also should be proud of its leadership role. But she also noted that survivors and their families have grown increasingly angry and frustrated with the slow progress by ICHEIC.
Washington state has assisted survivors in submitting more than 500 claims to ICHEIC and the companies involved, but only two Washington claims have been settled so far.
