A Sacramento man was arrested Nov. 13 on one felony count of insurance fraud.
Peter Perkins, 20, self-surrendered and was booked into the Sacramento County Jail, with bail set at $5,000. If convicted, Perkins could face up to five years in state prison and/or a maximum fine of $50,000.
On March 17, 2001, Perkins allegedly reported to his insurance carrier that his vehicle had been burglarized. Two days later, Perkins stated to his insurance representatives that his stereo, amplifier and three subwoofers were stolen from his vehicle during the burglary. Perkins presented his carrier with a copy of an invoice from Auto Radio Stereo for the allegedly stolen stereo equipment in the amount of $3,000. Upon checking out the vehicle and noting no visible damage, Perkins’ insurance carrier referred the case to the California Department of Insurance (CDI).
In an interview with CDI, Perkins allegedly initially told investigators he purchased the subwoofers and amplifiers from a friend for approximately $3,000 and that they had been stolen from his vehicle.
Later in the interview, he recanted his story and told investigators the subwoofers and amplifier were never installed in the vehicle. Perkins told investigators a friend allowed him to use the invoice for the subwoofers and amplifier on the condition that Perkins split the insurance claim money with him.
Total attempted loss was estimated at $3,379.
